NEWSLETTER FOR WEEK OF October 20 -October 24
Important Dates:
-October 16th Steam Night (See blurb below and click HERE for the flyer)

-October 24th: Q1 Report Cards go home
-November 4th: Teacher Workday- no school for students
STEAM Night: on October 16th, provides an opportunity for families to experience hands-on, innovative elements of STEAM. Science-Technology-Engineering-Art-Math) that enhance the curriculum. Additionally, we will be displaying science fair projects submitted by our HSES students. Everyone from the community is welcome. We can’t wait to see you there!
Run Club: The 2025 HSES Scrambled Legs Run Club registration will open October 14th at 6:00 am. The Run Club is open to any interested student in Grades 3-5. The dates of practices will be 10-22, 10-29, 11-5, 11-12, and 11-19. Registration will be located on the school website under the Student Life tab, Student Opportunities, and then the Scrambled Legs Run Club link. Registration will stop after 70 students have signed up.
What we're learning next week:
ELA: Next week, we're starting unit 1 of Module 2 in EL! This module is all about research of informational texts. We are specifically focusing on animals and their defense mechanisms for survival! They will be learning to research, researching an animal, writing an informational essay on their animal, and eventually writing a choose your own adventure story using their knowledge of their animal.
Math: Next week, we'll begin our unit on MULTIPLICATION. They will learn how to multiply 2x1, 3x1, 2x2 digits, and more. They will also focus on word problems involving multiplication. This is where knowing small facts becomes extremely important. If you want to understand and help your child with the possible (new method) they'll be learning---please click on the math tab of this website and scroll down to unit 4: Multiplication. There are links to various strategies there.
Knowing multiplication facts is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THIS YEAR. Please practice daily with your child. Flash cards are still in style for this. There are apps as well.
Social Studies: Next week, we will begin learning about the history of NC, including the people that lived here, and how they have impacted the culture of NC today.

Spelling Bee papers: The school holds a spelling bee each year through various rounds. A study paper was sent home of various words on the fourth grade list. We will be holding a class "bee" the last week before our track out. We will name two winners in our class, who will go on to the school bee. This is for fun, so no stress! Our class bee will take place on Weds, September 24th.
What we're learning next week:
ELA: Next week, we'll finish our first EL module on poetry! We are finishing our third and final unit. We finished reading the book, Love That Dog, together (aloud), and we finished researching and writing our paper on what inspires famous poets to write. Now we are going to become poets ourselves and write a poem and figure out what inspires us to write!
Math: Next week, we'll continue our third math unit on place value and addition and subtraction. We finished the place value section, but now we will be finishing the addition and subtraction of large numbers up to the millions place.
Knowing multiplication facts is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THIS YEAR. Please practice daily with your child. Flash cards are still in style for this. There are apps as well.
Science: Next week, we will continue learning about Earth's place in the universe in relation to the sun and moon. We will learn about what causes day and night, as well as the seasons.

The Camp Flintlock date is set as Sept. 11th (Thursday) and it is on school grounds. The Marbles one is at Marbles downtown Raleigh, but the date is still TBD. It is tentatively scheduled for mid March. In order to be a volunteer/chaperone you must be an approved and registered volunteer with the school which takes a few weeks to go through. You can call the school to find out if you are already approved. Thanks so much!

Field trip lunch form: Sent home with your child on Friday. Please fill out the lunch form if you want your child to get cafeteria lunch for the 3 field trip days we have this year. If you'd like them to just bring their lunch from home, please write in that somewhere on the sheet. (There is no box to check like I Thought)

Please complete the Google Form linked HERE. It is immensely helpful to me to have all information about your child in one place. This also helps me get to know your child through your eyes. I really appreciate it!

I will use Class Dojo for classroom positive behavior. Students earn points for good behavior and work ethic, performing classroom jobs, etc. They can also lose points for disrespectful behavior, being off task, talking after warnings, etc. When they lost points, they sign a book describing their behavior. Please connect with your child so you can see their progress! If you need help connecting, please email me.
