1. Encourage them to read each day.
2. Don't assume they are always reading on their own- check in on them regularly regarding their reading!
3. Hold them accountable! Ask them questions, read a chapter with them at bedtime and see if they can summarize what is going on so far in the book.
4. Go to some of the reading practice sites I have listed under helpful resources.
5. Take your child to the public library and encourage them to select from a variety of genres- Diary of a Wimpy Kid is fine as long as they are also picking out other genres like non-fiction or a good fantasy book! Your child can also check out books from the HDE library or my class library (as long as it is signed out through me). Take a look at the 4th grade reading lists below.
