How the 2025-26 Identification Process Works:
1). New to WCPSS 3rd Graders, AND 4th and 5th GRADERS: Nominate your child for AIG consideration by COMPLETING A FALL OR SPRING NOMINATION FORM. The Fall Nomination Form can be found HERE .
The School Based Committee for Gifted Education (SBCGE) will meet to discuss all nominees. Student data is reviewed to determine if the student is eligible to be referred for AIG Evaluation. Student data includes teacher observations, classroom work samples, report card grades, and scores from items such as mClass, NC Check Ins, STARS, and grade level assessments. Students will have to demonstrate consistent above grade level performance of all items to be eligible for AIG identification. IF REFERRED, new 3rd graders, and any 4th & 5th Graders will take the CogAT and IOWA tests. A portfolio will be started for these students which will include the student data above and the results of the CogAT and IOWA tests. Parents will then be contacted with the identification results.
Please see the subpage under the "Identification" tab for specific information about the CogAT, IOWA, and Fall/Spring testing dates.
2). GRADE 2:: ALL STUDENTS WILL TAKE THE COGAT during a set testing time frame TBD. Based on the results of the CogAT, students who score at or above 85% on any of the batteries/subtests will be eligible to take the IOWA Reading and Math assessment.
3). FOR ALL GRADES: The School Based Committee for Gifted Education (SBCGE) is a committee made up of the AIG teachers, administrators, and classroom teachers. They will analyze data that has been compiled on each student and decide whether or not the data supports having a child referred to move through the identification process. The data that will be reviewed includes teacher observations, work samples, report card grades, and scores from items such as mClass, NC Check Ins, STARS, and grade level assessments. Students will have to demonstrate consistent above grade level performance to be eligible for AIG identification.
4). FOR ALL GRADES: Using the information we have gathered, the SBCGE will use a rubric style matrix, developed by the WCPSS Accelerated Learning Services Department, in order to determine whether a child qualifies for reading and/or math identification in AIG. Referred students that are not identified will be placed in the Talent Development group. This group will allow students to have the opportunity to complete challenging projects while developing and nurturing a student's potential.
