Spring 2026 Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) Information:
Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) is the practice of skipping a grade level of content in ONE SUBJECT AREA or assigning a student to a higher-grade level than is typical, given the student's age, for the purpose of providing access to appropriately challenging learning opportunities. SSA is an accelerative practice that allows students to show mastery of the content of a course without having taken the course. Testing for eligibility is required during the WCPSS mandated testing window. A student must be enrolled AND attending a WCPSS public school to participate in SSA Testing. This is not the same as AIG, or CogAT/IOWA screening. AIG is a separate program.
Students are only able to TEST AND QUALIFY for ONE SUBJECT AREA...
*For example, a parent could nominate his/her child to skip a grade level of content in either Language Arts OR Mathematics.
How Do I Learn More?
A virtual parent information session will be held on TUESDAY, JANUARY 20th at 6:30pm. We strongly encourage families who are interested in requesting SSA Testing for their child to attend to learn program specifics and how SSA works at Highcroft. Please join the meeting here: SSA Parent Information Session
You can also visit the WCPSS SSA website.
How do I request testing for my child?
First, determine which subject area, Language Arts OR Math, you are requesting testing for. Then, you MUST complete the district's test request form by JANUARY 23, 2026. Late requests WILL NOT be accepted - this is district policy. Please use THIS LINK to request SSA testing for your student.
Please direct any SSA questions to Mrs. Walters at dwalters1@wcpss.net.
Thank You!
WCPSS screens all second grade students in January/February with the Cognitive Abilities Test, or CogAT. The CogAT appraises general thinking skills that the student gradually develops from both in-school and out-of-school experiences. The classroom teacher is able to use the data from the CogAT Test for instructional planning. Counselors, Student Support Teams (including AIG Teachers), and other support personnel in the schools may also use the CogAT data to assist in educational planning and gifted identification.
