March 9-13

Reading:  This week we will begin another short story about Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie, "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens".  Our reading skill focus will be on sequencing events and comparing/contrasting as we compare this new story to "Peter Pan".  

Writing: The writing focus this week will be on narrative writing as the students write an additional chapter to Peter Pan, picking up where the original story left off.  

Math: The students will take their area and perimeter assessment on Wednesday.  Thursday, we begin a very legthy unit on fractions that will take us through track out and continue when we return.  In third grade we only study fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8.  

Science:  We will continue to study Earth's land and water features.

March 16-20

Reading:  We will continue to read and study an additional  short story about Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie, "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens".  Our reading skill focus will be on sequencing events and comparing/contrasting as we compare this new story to "Peter Pan".    The students will take their assessment on Thursday.

Writing: The writing focus this week will be on opinion writing.  We will learn to use strong language to persuade others to see our point of view on various opinion topics.  

Math: We kicked off fractions on Friday.  This is a very long and critical unit.  In third grade we only study fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8.  The next couple of weeks will be focused on studying the meaning of numerators and denominators.  Then we will begin comparing frations and identifying equivalent fractions when we return from track out.  25% of the EOG is fractions.  So, please check your child's work coming home and review as needed.  

Science:  We will continue to study Earth's land and water features.

March 2-6

Reading:  We will finish reading Peter Pan with a focus on retelling the main events and sequencing events.  The students have also begun book clubs and will be reading or meeting with their groups each day.    

Writing: We will continue practicing some grammar skills so we can write an additional chapter to Peter Pan.  This week's focus will be on possessive nouns, capitalization and dialogue.  

Math: We will continue to use our multiplication fluency to find the area of quadrilaterals.  Wednesday, I will be introducing perimeter as well.  

Science:  We got a little behind last week.  So our test is now Wednesday.  Thursday we will begin a new unit on Earth's land and water features.

February 23-27

Reading:  We will continue to study the literary classics through Peter Pan with a focus on identifying character traits and understanding how their traits affect a character's point of view.  This week we will add on thinking how the character's actions propel the story forward.    

Writing: This week will be a focus shades of meaning with vocabulary.  We will be looking at how we can make our writing more descriptive by using various strengths of a word .  For example, glum, down, sad, depressed.  We will also study pronouns.  

Math: We will continue to classify, compare, and contrast quadrilaterals based on their attributes.  Students will take their assessment on Wednesday.  Thursday, we begin a unit on area and perimeter.  

Science:  This week's focus is shadows and how the location of the sun in the sky affects them.  We will take our assessment on Friday.

February 16-20

Reading:  We will continue to study the literary classics through Peter Pan with a focus on identifying character traits and understanding how their traits affect a character's point of view.  

Writing: This week will be a focus on grammar.  We will look at using quotation marks appropriately in writing within dialogue and subject/verb agreement.  

Math: We will continue to identify the attributes of quadriaterals and use the attributes to classify and compare/contrast them.  

Science:  This week's focus will be on comparing/contrasting the Earth, moon, and stars.

February 9-13

Reading:  Monday, the students will take their first EL assessment of the quarter.  Tuesday, we will be doing the Reading NC Check In B Assessment, which covers all of second quarter reading standards.  The remainder of the week will continue our Peter Pan/Literary Classic unit as we study character traits.  

Writing: The main focus for writing this quarter is narrative.  We will practice "showing not telling" in our writing by writing a descriptive paragraph of what our Neverlands look like.   

Math: Monday, the students will take their final multiplication assessment, which will be focused on multiple step story problems.  Tuesday, we will being our geometry unit which focuses on the attributes of quadrilaterals.  

Science:  This week's focus will be on comparing/contrasting the Earth, moon, and stars.

Reading:  We are leaving frogs in quarter 2 and moving on to Neverland!  This week we will begin our literary classic as we begin to read J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan.  

Writing: The main focus for writing this quarter is narrative.  We will begin the week with a fun, melting snowman creative writing paragraph and then begin writing a descriptive paragraph about our own Neverlands.  

Math: This week's multiplication focus is on solving multi-step story problems using multiplication and division.  Friday, the students will take their final assessment for this unit.  

Science:  Our new science unit is on Earth, Moon and Stars.  This week's focus will be on identifying what a solar system is and describing what makes up our own solar system.
