Welcome to Intro to Meteorology
This course is designed for the student fascinated by not only weather phenomena but also for those interested in pursuing a career in the atmospheric sciences. Strong emphasis will be placed on scientific laws and principles that interrelate with vast numbers of diverse astronomic, geographical, and atmospheric variables that ultimately result in output that we simply call weather. This course provides a relatable and experiential view of our sometimes invisible, but always impactful atmosphere and its importance to life on this planet.
Course Considerations/Resources
Successful completion of Math 2 and an earth/environmental science course are suggested prerequisites.
Units of Study
Introduction to Atmosphere and its Qualities
Thermodynamics

Weather Phenomena
In order to cover all of the state objectives, it is necessary to maintain a steady pace. It is imperative that students keep up with their daily assignments, review class material daily, and seek help as needed. I STRONGLY encourage students to seek assistance from me during office hours and class time. Students are expected to review and study class notes in order to become proficient in these topics and standards. I will be available during the office hours posted on my website.
Grading: Several methods will be used to evaluate student performance. The grading system below will be used to determine quarter grades. There will also be final evaluative assessments for course completion.
Tests/Major Projects: Academic = 30%; Honors = 40%
Quizzes/ Minor Projects/Labs: 20%
Classwork/ Major Labs: Academic = 35%; Honors = 25%
Homework-15%
No grades will be given for completion only. They will all be graded for accuracy.
*If a student receives a test score below 85%, they may take a retest within 2 weeks, however will not receive a score higher than 85%. Students must complete the dept specific retake form before retaking a test.
Late Work- All students receiving honors credit for a course have the opportunity to recover grades through completing alternative assignments to demonstrate mastery, turning in missing work, and/or completing retests. Students will earn a minimum of 70% (Honors, 60%) of the grade they would have received if turned in on time. Work that is submitted on time and meets the minimal completion requirements will receive a score no less than 50%.
Honors students' late work is due by the end of the unit or the day of the unit assessment and does not need to be accepted by the teacher after this time.
Academic students' late work is due one week before the end of quarter and does not need to be accepted by the teacher after this time.
Communication:
Student grades will be posted through PowerSchool, and they will be updated as assignments are graded, which will be at the least, by the end of the day every Friday. If you have any questions or concerns about grades, assignments, or progress, please contact me. I will respond within one business day to all emails. Remind 101: I will be sending out messages often, to keep you informed about what is happening in class and to send reminders about important dates. You can choose to receive the messages by either texts or emails.
Wakefield High School’s Honor Code:
The students of Wakefield High School are committed to being honest and responsible in the completion of academic materials and interactions with the school administration and community. Cheating, stealing, plagiarism (passing off another’s work, words, or ideas as one’s own) and lying (including willful distortion or misrepresentation) are considered violations of the Honor Code. Through a joint fulfillment of this code, students and faculty will achieve their fullest potential in academic excellence and character.
Cheating is defined as: the giving or receiving of unauthorized class work or homework, copying work and turning it in as one’s own, or using unauthorized aids on tests and quizzes.
Throughout the semester, my hope is that students learn to manage their time wisely, set goals, work hard, have fun, but most of all take pride in their achievements.
Sincerely,
__Mr. K______________
