The Science Olympiad Team is a group of 15 students who love to solve very difficult science problems. They will design, build, and test projects as well as do extensive research on various science topics. The regional tournament will be held TBD (February 2025). If we place high enough, we will advance to the state competition which we are hoping can be still be held at NC State on April 25 & 26, 2025. Team members must commit to both sets of dates.
Check out the Science Olympiad Companion for Students to get a better look at what is involved!
Due to anticipated interest, Mills Park will have 2 Science Olympiad teams. By having 2 teams, a total of 30 students can participate and represent Mills Park at the regional competition. We will also choose several students to serve as alternates in case someone is unable to attend the regional event. For State Competition, only 15 of those students can participate. There will be more information on that selection process once students start selecting the events they are going to prepare for. Please Note: All participants are required to pay the $60 club fee that covers the cost of competition registration, team shirt, and lab materials.
Our coaches are a combination of teachers, parents, and high school students. We realize many of the team members are involved in various activities such as sports, the school play, and church events, but as a team member we are expecting you to put Science Olympiad at the top of your priority list. Students must commit to attending every Tuesday afterschool from 3:30-4:45 pm. Students must also maintain a B or better in all classes to remain on the Science Olympiad team.
Parent support is a vital part of our team. Parents are expected to provide supplies for their child’s events, monitor their event progress, and help at the competitions. In addition the team welcomes parent volunteers with strengths in an event to help prepare all the students and team parents who will help provide supervision on Saturday practices.
\Please note, that if the team places to go to National Competition, there will be additional fees to cover the cost of travel, registration, and room & board for all participants (Varsity team only).
