If you have questions along the way, please email Mary Grace Kibler (mkibler@wcpss.net).
*Are you new to WCPSS? If your child was identified as AIG at their previous non-WCPSS school, please contact Kelly Barber (kbarber@wcpss.net) to learn about the reciprocity process.
A parent/guardian or teacher submits a written AIG nomination for their student. You must include the following information: your name, your relationship to the student, the student’s name, ID number, and grade level. Please email nominations to mkibler@wcpss.net
You can nominate your students at any point throughout the year.
Nominations are evaluated at our October SBCGE Meeting and our January SBCGE Meeting
The AIG Teachers collect formal and informal data indicators in preparation for the School-Based Committee for Gifted Education (SBCGE) meeting. Examples of these indicators include: classroom grades, EOG scores, FastBridge & STARMath scores, etc.
The SBCGE meets monthly. The committee reviews all available student data and documentation based on formal and informal indicators. This information determines which of the nominated students will be referred.
For each child’s nomination, the SBCGE makes one of the following decisions:
October Meeting Agenda = 1st semester nominations / January Meeting Agenda = 2nd semester nominations
"Decision Not to Refer": This student will not be referred for additional evaluation and is not recommended for AIG differentiation.
The AIG identification process concludes at this point.
"Decision to Refer": This student will be referred for additional testing and more data is required to determine whether the student should be recommended for AIG differentiation.
Parents will receive a Prior Notice and Consent for Evaluation (1017)
Students referred for additional evaluation will take the CogAT and Iowa tests.
Results are traditionally received one month after the administration of the exam.
The SBCGE analyzes each student's CogAt and Iowa test results.
November SBCGE & March SBCGE
Some students may require additional evaluation to determine whether the student should be recommended for AIG differentiation (Woodcock-Johnson, Reynolds Intellectual Screening Test - RIST)
If the SBCGE requests another evaluation it will be administered prior to the SBCGE making a final decision.
The SBCGE convenes to make a final decision about AIG differentiation for a student. This meeting combines evaluation of factors including, but not limited to:
Informal indicators
CogAt and Iowa aptitude scores
EOG and EOC achievement scores
Work samples
Parent and teacher checklists
These factors will be compared against WCPSS' AIG requirements and gateway flowchart to determine if the student meets the criteria for AIG differentiation.
The SBCGE can make one of the following decisions:
December SBCGE / April SBCGE
"Recommended for AIG Differentiation": The student will begin service at the start of the next semester (Students identified in spring will start services in the following school year.)
Parents will receive an Initial Consent for Services (1021)
"Talent Development": The student will receive AIG services but will be reevaluated to determine if they have met the criteria for AIG eligibility, each year.
"NOT Recommended for AIG Differentiation": The student will not receive AIG differentiation services.
Parents will receive an Evaluation Results Notice to Parents.
