Collection management is an ongoing, collaborative process led by the professional school librarian with input from the Media & Technology Advisory Committee.
It is more than just the writing of a collection management plan. It includes the following:
A useful collection analysis should highlight the strengths and needs of the library collection in a way that is easy for stakeholders to understand.
The collection management plan should set priorities for the collection based on the needs identified in the collection analysis. The plan should outline strategic goals for purchasing, curating, and weeding over a 3-year timeframe.
The thoughtful, intentional curation of resources is part of managing a collection. Curation is anything you do to help make your collection more accessible: displays, browsing bins, Destiny Discover collections, etc.
Consult professional resources and district policies when selecting and purchasing new books and digital resources for the school library. Follow best practices for purchasing and for cataloging and processing new materials.
A healthy library is weeded regularly and strategically. Develop a plan for weeding that is informed by your collection analysis and complements the purchasing goals outlined in your collection management plan.
Every WCPSS school library should have a useful, multi-year collection management plan that includes the following:
A description of the school library program;
An analysis of the collection that explains its strengths and needs;
A broad list of overall priorities for purchasing, curating, and weeding;
A list of specific yearly goals (over 3 years) for purchasing, curating, and weeding that address the listed priorities.
Librarians who do not have a plan that meets these criteria should participate in one of the professional learning opportunities listed below.
This course will run from July 2025-December 2025. Credit will be awarded for the successful completion of each component of the collection management plan as outlined in the Library Media Services Collection Management Plan Template.
This course is intended for librarian who do not have a current collection management plan, or have a plan that has been identified as needing major revisions.
Unlike previous versions of this course, there will NOT be monthly virtual meetings. The course is entirely self-paced. Susan and Kristel will provide written feedback on assignment submission as they are completed.
