The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is a service-oriented organization dedicated to impactful projects within our school and local community. Our meetings focus on developing the five core pillars: Scholarship, Citizenship, Leadership, Service, and Character. We recognize that middle school is a time of growth, so our program is designed to introduce these values without overwhelming students with excessive commitments. While the formal selection process begins in January of 7th grade, we encourage interested students to begin preparing in 6th grade by maintaining strong academic standards and proactively collecting service hours. Selected members will serve during their 8th-grade year. Please refer to the Grade 7 page for the full selection timeline.
Wear your NJHS t-shirt to school on meeting days
No food is allowed at the meetings
Tracked out students do not need to attend the meeting, but be sure to check the agenda posted in Canvas for meeting details.
The main purpose of NJHS is to serve our school and community. There are many events we sponsor throughout the year such as:
Direct students/parents around the school on the first day of school and during Open House
Teach 6th graders the HMS way during the first week of school (PBIS)
Group service projects: courtyard clean up, decorating the hall walls, thank a bus driver campaign, etc.
Lead tours around HMS to rising 6th grade parents and students
Once selected for membership, students serve in the 8th grade year. Each 8th grade member must earn at least 10 hours of community service per semester. Hours may be earned at HMS or by volunteering in the community
Fall food drive for the local food bank
Spring fundraiser for HMS through the carnival at Flora Festival
Attend monthly meetings to plan service and participate in leadership/team building activities
The NJHS Leadership Team is made up of 2 students from each track. The team works with NJHS advisers to plan and implement each meeting. Working with the team is a great way to shape leadership skills. The team is elected by the NJHS members during the first meeting of the new school year.
Here is just a sampling of service ideas. Student must look in the community for service opportunities. There are not enough in-school NJHS sponsored events for everyone to meet with 10 hour requirement. Check with Ms. Worley if you question whether your service ideas will count for hours.
10 hours per semester
1st semester hours due by the first Friday in December.
2nd semester hours due by the last Friday in May for all tracks.
The service form is posted as an assignment in Canvas. Members will fill it out digitally, insert a selfie of the event and submit through Canvas.
The National Junior Honor Society is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1929.
