Heritage Middle School invites 6th graders to prepare for the National Junior Honor Society. The membership process begins January of 7th grade and is based on scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship.
Eligibility for candidacy is based solely on Scholarship: students must maintain a 3.6 cumulative GPA to be invited to apply.
Start Preparing Now: While the invitation is GPA-based, the final Candidate Profile (due in March of 7th grade) must include documentation of 10 community service hours.
Need inspiration for service projects? We’ve curated a comprehensive list of ideas and suggestions on the NJHS website. You can find everything you need under the Activities tab on the HMS homepage.
6th grade students intending on seeking NJHS membership second semester of 7th grade will need to document at least 10 hours of service completed during middle school.
Log hours on the form linked on the right. You must make a COPY of the form in order to edit. (Do not request access.)
The form will be submitted in March with the rest of the candidate profile.
Note: For NJHS, service is generally defined as technical work for which the student does not receive compensation (money or gifts). Helping a family member with chores usually doesn't count, but helping a neighbor for free is a great example of the Citizenship pillar!
Our school only uses the first-semester GPA from 7th grade when determining NJHS eligibility. This ensures that all students are evaluated using the same academic expectations and grading standards at the same point in their middle school experience.
Because sixth grade is considered a transition year and grading practices and course rigor can vary, we rely on seventh-grade data to reflect students’ most current and consistent academic performance.
