Handwashing

Washing your hands with soap and water is the best way to decrease the number of bacteria on your hands. It helps you avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others.

Handwashing can prevent about 30% of diarrhea-related sicknesses and about 20% of respiratory infections (e.g., colds)

To properly wash your hands:

· Wet your hands with clean, running water

· Apply soap and lather your hands for at least 20 seconds, including both sides of your hands, between your fingers and your fingernails

· Rinse your hands with clean, running water

· Dry your hands with a clean towel/paper towel, or air dry your hands

When to wash your hands:

  • Before, during, and after preparing food
  • Before eating food
  • Before and after caring for someone who is sick
  • Before and after treating a wound
  • After using the restroom
  • After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet
  • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
  • After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste
  • After handling pet food or pet treats
  • After touching garbage/trash

Hand Sanitizer

  • Is effective in reducing the number of bacteria
  • Must contain an alcohol content of 60-95% alcohol to be effective
  • Does not eliminate all types of germs
  • Are not as effective if your hands are visibly dirty.
