"Multi-Tiered System of Supports, or MTSS, allows teachers to quickly identify student needs and the best methods to address them. These can be needs of individual students or groups of students, related to academics, behavior or both. The idea is to get each and every student – those with profound needs, those who are exceptionally gifted and all those in between – what he or she requires to be successful (https://www.wcpss.net/Page/305 )."
A Multi-Tiered System of Supports organizes instruction and interventions into levels of support. MTSS uses data to identify students needing additional support which may be for academic and/or behavioral needs.
MTSS has three levels, or tiers, of instruction and support, all aimed at giving teachers a streamlined way to provide the best instruction to all students.
Level 1 (CORE) - ALL students receiving core instruction
Level 2 (STRATEGIC) - Students needing more support also receive small-group intervention with a general education teacher. The support is targeted specifically toward each student's need.
Level 3 (INTENSIVE) - This is the most intensive level of support. Support is still targeted toward specific student needs but may be provided on a more frequent or intense basis.
1. High-quality instruction for all students
2. Frequent monitoring of student progress to determine needs
3. Communication with parents
