The Herbert Akins Road MS learning community collaborates to facilitate equitable outcomes and growth through social, emotional, and academic opportunities.
The HARMS Band program is made up of three bands: Beginner Band (6th), Intermediate Band (7th), and Advanced Band (8th). The program also offers two extra-curricular after school clubs: Pep Band, and Jazz Band.
Students do not need prior experience before joining 6th grade band, an audition/screening will be required before joining 7th or 8th grade band as a new member. Band is a year-long elective that does not interfere with after school sports or clubs.
The NC Essential Standards for music are the standards put forth by the state to help guide teachers in curriculum design and classroom instruction.
Band students are expected to bring ALL materials for band every single class.
Instrument (this includes all parts, mouthpiece, reeds, neck straps, drumsticks, mallets, etc.)
Band Binder (Includes: Method Book, Concert Music, Practice log, Pass-off log, Binder check log, Extra sheet protectors, and a pencil!)
Weekly Expectations
Practice 90 minutes a week (Signed/Initialed by parent/guardian on practice log).
Every Wednesday students will have a binder check and the "band builder checklist" will be completed and placed in their band binder for parent/guardian to check and initial.

Students are graded on this rubric in 2 week cycles - they will receive their grade every Wednesday via their Band Builders checklist.
