We use the EL Reading curriculum to teach Reading and Language Arts. Students spend one quarter diving deep into texts and completing tasks surrounding the theme. 

Fifth grade themes include: 

• Stories of Human Rights

• Biodiversity in the Rainforest

• Athletes Leaders of Social Change

• The Impact of Natural Disasters

Fifth Grade math standards focus heavily on Numbers and Operations in Base Ten (NBT) which include: adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals and whole numbers. We also dive deep into working with fractions (NF standards) which includes: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and mixed numbers. 

Additional standards we explore include: 

• Algebraic Thinking (OA)

• Measurement and Data (MD)

• Geometry (G)

Fifth grade is the first year students will take a Science EOG. 

Our Science units include:

• Heating/Cooling, Changing Properties and Weather Patterns and Phenomena 

• Interdependence of Plants and and Animals in Ecosystems

• Structures and Functions of Living Organisms and Characteristic of Living Organisms

• Interactions of Matter and Energy and  Relationships of Force and Matter

Fifth grade Social Studies includes the following units:

• Thinking Like a Historian

• Pre-Colonialism and Revolution (Indigenous People, European Colonization and the American Revolution)

• Developing America (New nation, Westward Expansion Civil War)

• Changing Society (Reconstruction, Jim Crow, Immigration, and Civil Rights)
