This is the stage where you think of ideas, develop some questions, and do preliminary background. 

Investigate

This is the time to find sources, narrow down questions, record notes on things you investigate. 

Synthesize 

This the time to connect ideas, organize your notes, construct meaning, and draw conclusions. 

Express

This is the time to create your final product, bring together your ideas into a paper, presentation, etc, and show a polished understanding of you work.
