Japanese 1 (A or B Day)
Japanese 2 (A or B Day)
Japanese 3 Honors (A&B Day 1st semester) and Japanese 4 Honors (A&B Day 2nd semester)
Students must register for both Japanese 3 and 4.
AP®/IB Japanese (A or B Day)
Current middle school students: Talk to your Japanese teacher or world language department head when registering to sign up for the placement test. Your test results (along with your current teacher’s recommendation when available) will determine your readiness to place into Japanese 2 or Japanese 3. Students with an extensive Japanese background (ex: students whose parents speak Japanese with them at home) may be able to place into AP Japanese, but will need to schedule an interview with Ms. Fawcett to confirm their level.
Here are some general recommendations to give you an idea of the right level for you.
Sign up for Japanese I if…
• You have never studied Japanese.
• You have studied a little but want to review the basics.
• You took 1 or 2 years of Japanese in middle school and your teacher recommends that you review the basics.
Sign up for Japanese II if…
• You took 2 or 3 years of Japanese in middle school and your teacher recommends that you continue to Japanese II.
Sign up for Japanese III/IV if…
• You took 3 years of Japanese in middle school and your teacher suggests that you are ready for Japanese III. Students at this level have usually excelled in their classes and studied a lot outside of class.
Sign up for AP Japanese if…
• You have extensive history in studying Japanese, perhaps having learned it from elementary school or earlier.
