A strong school library program connects students to the world around them through research and inquiry, and by supporting a climate and culture of reading. These connections are made through collaborative lessons and programming that integrate information and technology skills with classroom curriculum, through the curation of relevant and reliable print and digital resources, and by empowering students in the 4C’s.
Equity & Cultural Competency
A strong school library program also displays a commitment to inclusiveness and respect for diversity that is embodied in its policies, instruction, programming, materials, and pedagogy. This includes ensuring access, amplifying historically marginalized voices, and promoting literature and informational texts that reflect the lives, experiences, and interests of all students.
Focus Areas for 2018-19
After taking the Wake Forward assessment the MTAC Members decided to focus on the areas of Curriculum & Instruction and Equity & Cultural Competency. We chose these areas because they line up with our School Improvement Plan and the goals and ideals of the Library Media Technology program.
Expected Outcome #1
Over the course of the 18/19 academic year, the MTAC team will gain a better understanding of our current collection in correlation to our student population in order to find any gaps that may exist. We will use this data to guide future purchases for the Media Center.
* To accomplish this goal the MTAC team will conduct multiple collection analyses with a focus on diversity and curricular needs, the Media Coordinator and Technology Teacher will attend focused Convergence sessions, and the Media Coordinator will attend professional development on the topic provided by Wake Forward.
Expected Outcome #2
Over the course of the 18/19 academic year, our media program will take a look at the current usage of technology in our building. We have discovered that the usage of devices and resources is not equitable among the grade levels and/or classrooms. Our goal is to provide Professional Development opportunities to the staff in order encourage more equity.
* To accomplish this goal the Technology Teacher will provide various professional development opportunities for the staff, the Media Coordinator and Technology Teacher will attend focused Convergence sessions, and the Media Coordinator will attend professional development on the topic provided by Wake Forward.
