July 17, 2023 Student Data Review & The AIG Identification Process
Each July AIG teachers in WCPSS review the data for all students who were in grades 3, 4, and 5 during the 22-23 school year. The purpose is to see if they are good candidates for the AIG identification process. This data review includes looking at things like EOG percentiles, report card scores, NC Check-Ins, mClass and STAR Math scores. Keep in mind when we look at EOG results we focused on the percentile the student earned, not the level.
The data for students who were enrolled at Turner Creek ES has been reviewed. If your student's data showed the need for AIG and they were not already participating in the AIG program you were contacted via a letter in your student's backpack.
If you have questions about this process contact me at asheehan@wcpss.net.

December 5, 2022 - 3rd Grade Families on T1, T2, T3, and T4 - Iowa and CogAT Testing Updates
Testing Updates & Individual Student Score Reports
All CogAT and Iowa testing is finished for 3rd grade students who are currently enrolled at Turner Creek ES.
All Iowa and CogAT results have been sent home with students on tracks 1 and 2.
All CogAT results have been sent home with students on tracks 3 and 4.
We are still waiting for Iowa Assessment results for students on tracks 3 and 4. Once we get these we will send them home with students.
All results were sent with a detailed letter from the county explaining what each test measured.
AIG Identification Process
3rd grade students who earned a 95% or higher somewhere on their Iowa and/or CogAT tests are automatically eligible for the AIG identification process. Letters have been sent home with these students asking for parent consent to put them through the AIG identification process.
If you did not recieve a letter and you feel this was a mistake please email me, the AIG teacher, at asheehan@wcpss.net.
It is possible some students will be eligible for the AIG identification process without earning scores of 95% or higher on their CogAT tests and Iowa Assessments. These students have strong data coming from their classrooms that indicates the need to go through the process. This data has to be collected and then discussed by the School Based Committee for Gifted Education. The SBCGE is made up of a team of teachers and other school support staff who help analyze student data to determine what the next steps should be for students. This takes time and can often occur over the course of a few different meetings. We are currently in the process of reviewing all student data. Therefore, the letters for these students will be sent home during the first few weeks of January.
October 28, 2022 - Third Grade Families on T1, T2 - Iowa Assessments
The CogAT Tests and Iowa Assessments are county wide screeners for gifted identification. The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) was administered this academic year to all third grade students in the Wake County Public School System. The data from the CogAT tests and classroom data from the third grade teachers is used to determine which students will take the Iowa Assessments. Read below to learn more about how schools decide which students are eligible for the Iowa Math and Reading Assessments.
Students scoring at or above the 85th percentile on the CogAT are automatically provided additional screening via the Iowa Assessments.
Students who scored below the 85th percentile on the CogAT and have demonstrated above grade level performance in reading and/or mathematics may also be eligible to take the Iowa Assessments in Reading and Math. The third grade teachers and AIG teacher look at classroom data to determine which students fall into this category.
If a parent or guardian wants to request Iowa testing for their student they can. Any student can take the Iowa Assessment if a teacher or parent/guardian requests it. Please contact your classroom teacher and tell them as soon as possible.
Students scoring at or above the 95th percentile on the CogAT in a verbal, quantitative, or nonverbal measure automatically qualify for gifted services as Intellectually Gifted (IG) and are eligible for additional academic screening to determine potential Academically Gifted (AG) status. These students have the option to take the Iowa for an AIG identification in reading and math, but they do not have to take the Iowa to qualify for the gifted program. (This paperwork will be coming home for eligible students during the next two months. It takes time for schools to analyze the test results.)
October 28, 2022 - Third Grade Families on T1, T2, and T3 - CogAT Results
CogAT results are back for tracks 1, 2, and 3. Results for tracks 1 and 2 will be sent home on Monday, October 31st. Track 3 will go home when they track back in. Look for them in your student's backpack. Read below to learn more about the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT).
Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Form 7 Parent Explanation
In the Wake County Public School System, the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is administered to all students in third grade. The CogAT measures general thinking and problem-solving skills and indicates how well the student uses these skills to solve verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal problems. The skills and abilities measured by the CogAT develop gradually throughout a person’s lifetime, but individuals vary in the rates at which they develop the skills. Because these abilities are closely related to an individual’s success in school, test results may be used in planning effective instructional programs. In combination with other relevant information about a student, scores can be used to adapt instruction in ways that enhance the student’s success in learning. The CogAT is one assessment of many that will assist school personnel in instructional planning.
The CogAT consists of three batteries: Verbal, Quantitative, and Nonverbal. Scores from these three batteries yield a partial composite and composite score. A brief description of each battery follows:
Verbal Battery (VN): The three subtests on the Verbal Battery appraise verbal inductive and deductive reasoning skills, as well as flexibility, fluency, and adaptability in working with verbal materials and solving verbal problems. This cluster of verbal reasoning abilities plays an important role in developing skills in reading comprehension, critical thinking, writing, and virtually all verbal learning tasks.
Quantitative Battery (QN): The three subtests on the Quantitative Battery appraise deductive and inductive reasoning skills as well as flexibility and fluency in working with quantitative symbols and concepts. Successful performance on these subtests requires that students have a variety of strategies for working with quantitative materials. The reasoning skills appraised by this battery are significantly related to high-level problem solving not only in mathematics but also in other disciplines.
Nonverbal Battery (NV): The three subtests on the Nonverbal Battery present the most novel problems to students. The items on these subtests use only geometric shapes and figures and require no reading and no outside fund of knowledge. All these items appraise general inductive reasoning skills as well as flexibility and fluency in using and adapting cognitive strategies.
Composite Score (VQN): The composite score is a total (or overall) score of the three subtest batteries and indicates the overall variety and strength of the student’s cognitive resources for learning.
Your child’s performance on this assessment is compared to that of other students in the same age group. The standard age scores represent your child’s performance in each of the subtest batteries and in the composite.
October 3, 2022 - All Third Grade Families
This week students on tracks 1, 2, and 3 will be taking the CogATs. The only way to prepare is to ensure your student is on time for school each day, eating a healthy breakfast, and getting plenty of rest at night. Read below for more information.
CogAT and Iowa testing dates for Turner Creek are listed below. The goal of these tests is to screen for gifted students. This is the first formal step in our AIG identification process. All third grade students automatically take the CogAT tests. After the school receives those results students who score in the 85% or higher on any of the 9 different subtests or students who are nominated by parents will take the Iowa assessments.
Any third grade student can take the Iowa Assessments. They just have to be nominated and then a parent or guardian has to sign a testing permission slip. A nomination or Iowa testing must be in writing and sent to your homeroom teacher.
If you have questions about the tests please contact your homeroom teacher.

Students who are participating in small groups with the AIG teacher should be coming home with the letter linked below. Please read it to learn more about how your student was chosen and what a small group for Explorers is all about.
Explorers Small Groups - Letter To Families
All third grade students are considered for these small groups during the first two quarters of the school year. Participating students are determined using classroom data. This data includes but is not limited to things like unit tests, weekly quizzes, Star Math scores, BOG scores, exit tickets, attendance at school, intervention needs, participation levels, and engagement levels.
These groups are flexible. Students could participate for a few weeks and then not participate for a few weeks. It all depends on the data their homeroom teacher is seeing from them in class. Some students will be participating in one math group a week and/or one ELA group a week. While students are out of their homeroom they are not held responsible for any activities they miss. The idea is that our Explorers activity becomes their small group activity for that day.

August 8, 2022 3rd Grade Explorers
3rd Grade Explorers has started in all third grade classrooms. All teachers sent home a letter explaining what 3rd Grade Explorers is and how it leads up to the AIG identification process for third graders. You can find it by clicking on the AIG DOCUMENTS page on this website.
The first few weeks 3rd grade students will have the opportunity to do some problem solving using different CogAT puzzles. All 3rd grade students can access these in their homeroom Google Classroom.
In a few weeks Explorers small groups will start. The students in these groups will be chosen by the classroom teachers. They will make their choices based off of student data.
Students who are showing higher capabilities and the need for extra enrichments and extensions will be in these groups. The groups are flexible and can change depending on student data.
July 25, 2022 4/5 AIG Identification Process
To learn more visit the 4/5 AIG Identification Process page by clicking HERE.
The county only administers AIG tests to students in grades 4-5 two times a year. Once in the fall (August/Sept.) and then again in the spring (January/February). Some students may qualify for AIG without any testing.
If you are interested in nominating your student to be considered for this process reach out to your homeroom teacher to discuss your student's current process and data.
After you talk to your homeroom teacher fill out the nomination form. You can find that HERE.
The School Based Committee for Gifted Education will review all nominations after August 12th and determine whether to refer or not refer. If a child is not referred it is because at this time there is not enough data to support a referral to the AIG identification process.
July 12, 2022 Student Data Review & The AIG Identification Process
Each July AIG teachers in WCPSS review the data for all students in grades 4 and 5 to see if they are good candidates for the AIG identification process. This data review includes looking at things like EOG percentiles, report card scores, mClass and STAR Math scores. Currently the data for students at Turner Creek ES in grades 4 and 5 is being reviewed. If your student's data is showing the need for AIG and they are not already participating in the AIG program you will be contacted by the AIG teacher.
If you have questions about this process contact me at asheehan@wcpss.net.

May 2, 2022 - AIG (Gifted Education)
A Few Important Things to Know About AIG In WCPSS and at Turner Creek Elementary School
In Wake County we have three ways of identifying gifted students - AIG (Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted), IG (Intellectually Gifted), and AG (Academically Gifted). All of these students qualify for gifted services. And the way we serve those students is the same. The only difference is in what data we use to identify them for gifted services.
Each week at Turner Creek ES the AIG teacher has the opportunity to work directly with the AIG students on different enrichment and extension opportunities. Everything is based on the grade level curriculum and standards. During this time, the AIG students also get the opportunity to interact closely with their AIG peers in the AIG classroom.
This AIG peer time is extremely valuable in the development of their abilities as an AIG student and as a person.
Small pull-out groups that are held during the independent rotation block of their Math and/or ELA blocks.
Sometimes the school-wide schedule limits our own schedule. The AIG teacher and the homeroom teachers work together to provide the best opportunity possible.
Students who come to AIG do not miss anything in the classroom. AIG becomes their small group for that day. The classroom teachers adjust their lesson requirements so that AIG students do not miss out on needed learning opportunities while at AIG. AIG groups are held once a week for 45 minutes in math and/or ELA.
AIG and SSA are different programs offered by Wake County Public Schools.
April 27, 2022 - Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) Testing & Results
The window for SSA testing has closed for all students. No more students will be tested.
All results have been sent home via a letter. This letter was given to their homeroom teacher and sent home in their backpacks.
Per the county rules no student can retake their SSA test.
SSA testing is offered once a year in the spring.
Students who did not qualify have the option to test again next spring during the 22-23 school year.
Students who qualified for SSA during this round of testing will start attending SSA during the 22-23 school year. If you move schools a note will be included with your student's cumulative folder indicating they should be participating in SSA.
Email Anne Sheehan at asheehan@wcpss.net if you have questions about Single Subject Acceleration.
April 12, 2022 - Single Subject Acceleration (SSA) Testing & Results
SSA testing is underway for tracks 1, 2, and 3.
SSA testing for track 4 will start Tuesday April 19th.
VA parents who requested testing were sent a confirmation email on Monday, April 11, 2022. All VA students will be tested on Tuesday April 19 from 9:15am - 11:15am. Parents should plan to drop their student off in carpool at 8:45am and then pick them up at 11:15am. All students must bring a fully charged device and a water bottle to school. They won't need anything else. Miss Sheehan will be at the front of the school to greet them and escort them to the AIG classroom where they will test.
Track 4 students who are attending school in the building will get a letter on Monday April 18, 2022. All track 4 students will be tested on April 20th. They should arrive to their classroom, unpack, eat breakfast, and then walk to the AIG classroom. (Classroom teachers are aware of the schedule and will assist students in getting where they need to be.)
All SSA testing will be held in the school building.
There is no virtual testing option.
All SSA results will come home in the student's backpack 3-4 week after they take the SSA test.
After you get your results if you have questions please reach out to Anne Sheehan at asheehan@wcpss.net.
April 12, 2022 - 3rd Grade Turner Creek Elementary AIG Families
3rd AIG Small Groups
3rd grade AIG small groups at Turner Creek ES started a few weeks ago. All students who met the county criteria for AIG received paperwork from the AIG teacher. If you have questions please contact your homeroom teacher and the AIG teacher.

AIG Testing After My Student Has Gone Through the Process and Been Identified
Once a student has been identified for AIG they do not need to be tested in the future.
AIG identification will follow your student anywhere they go in Wake County. If they attend a different elementary school next their identification information will follow them. They will not need to be re-tested if they transfer to another Wake County school.
If a student is only identified in one area (math or ELA) they will have the opportunity to test again during the next school year.
All students in grades 4-5 have the opportunity to go through the AIG identification process once a school year.
In 3rd grade the county screens all students using the CogAT and Iowa Assessments. This helps us better determine which students are performing, or showing the potential for performing, at remarkably high levels of achievement when compared to others of their same age.
This year most all 3rd and 4th grade students were screened using the CogAT tests. Students who showed the potential and/or had strong classroom data were than given the opportunity to take the Iowa Assessments.
February 25, 2022 - Goodbye & Thank you!
I have transferred schools. I am now the AIG teacher at Turner Creek Elementary School. I am excited for my new journey and the new opportunities it will afford me. Thank you OCE community for everything you've been to me the last 4.5 years!
Best Wishes,
Miss Sheehan
December 20, 2021 - 3rd & 4th Grade AIG Identification Process
Iowa Assessments - Score Updates
Iowa Assessment scores are back for tracks 1 and 2.
Track 2 students received a copy of their scores last week.
Track 1 students will receive a copy of their scores the week of January 3rd.
We do not have scores for tracks 3 and 4. As soon as the county release those to use we will send them home.
Next Steps After CogAT and Iowa Assessments
After a student has taken the CogAT and Iowa Assessments we are able to make next step decisions about who needs to be referred for the AIG identification process. Some students will need additional testing, some students will be identified with no additional testing, and some students will be put through the AIG Student Portfolio Process.
Students can qualify for AIG services through testing (CogAT/Iowa Assessments) or through a student portfolio. A student portfolio is created by the classroom teacher using graded work samples from their classroom.
If you received a "Consent to Evaluate" letter this means your student has been nominated to be part of the AIG identification process. This means OCE would like to review your student's data through the AIG lens and be considered for AIG identification. Some of these students need additional AIG testing and some do not. July 22, 2021 - All 4th Grade Parents
District leadership has told schools that ALL CURRENT 4th GRADERS will be administered the CogAT and Iowa tests this school year. This is to make up for the fact that during the 20-21 school year no students in 3rd grade were able to take those assessments due to COVID-19 interruptions. (Keep in mind that in 3rd grade, and 3rd grade only, we typically screen all students using the CogAT and Iowa tests.)
AT THIS TIME (7/22/21) WE HAVE NOT BEEN TOLD ANY SPECIFIC DETAILS. We are waiting to hear specific details from district leadership. Once we know more we will reach out to teachers and parents/guardians.
