For National Board filming or other events, we have a Canon XA11 for staff to sign up to borrow.
When you sign up, email Ms. Thrash (ethrash@wcpss.net) to get it charged and ready, and plan to stop by the Library to chat about filming. Below we have ways to get started, but you can also read more about this camera and find the manual here.
It seems to wobble as it rolls in the halls, so we require that only staff members move it, and they watch for a loose camera on top!
The best way to get whole group and small group video is by using the rolling tripod. Let it pick up your full class instruction from the back of the room and roll it around with you as you visit groups of students during any work time.
We keep it set up, or if you need to, screw the footplate into the bottom of the camera to later click into the tripod.
Run a short test recording and stop and listen to make sure the microphone is working before you start recording the official event.
We have two batteries that each run almost 3 hours, or connect the power cable from camera to wall if you want to record for extended time. All supplies are in the labeled camera bag right behind the camera.
Zooming in and out is dizzying, it will work best for NBPTS to Zoom out and leave it there in most cases.
Thrash can help you or do this for you, she usually works Monday, Tuesday, Thursday.
Use the SD Card Adaptor in the camera bag.
Take the SD card out of the side of the camera, near the mini-screen and put in the dongle, and then in the USB-C port.
It will show up as a drive on the computer, you can drag files to downloads or the desktop. OR, upload files straight to Google Drive and watch it there. (The file won't lose too much quality there, it has to be a small file for submission anyway.)
Be patient while it imports the files.
Watch the video to take notes before editing.
Open file extension .MTS file within the DCIM folder on the SD Card
Open with Quicktime on the Mac as Quicktime will play the .MTS
In the top left corner of Quicktime Player, choose "File Export" and export it. That will make it an .mp4
Upload that .mp4 to iMovie or ClipChamp to Edit.
READ your description before recording so you know how long you need to clip.
Watch your video, and while you do, create a timeline to help you decide the exact break you want. This will also help when you're writing about each little detail in your narrative.
Example:
Minute - Activity
2:20 - Ava asks about cells
2:22 - move to group activity
2:24 - Ian moves to work with Seth
2:25 - Quiet questions with Yosef and Erin
...
21:17 - end of small group discussion
----
Keep a log of the exact times for filming. Mrs. Thrash can clip this for you, or you can edit.
Example of the information to send her to edit:
Link to Google Folder with the files
File Name
Exact Minutes from the timeline (3:45-8:45 and 12:01-14:00). Add details like listed above.
If there are two clips for this component, let us know each name and then the times from each. We will save it into one file to submit.
Lenovo Laptops - Use Microsoft ClipChamp, it works very similar to the directions below for Mac. (This program is having issues, reported to WCPSS Helpdesk on 2/25/25)
Mac using iMovie - Thrash can do this or you can borrow her MacBook
Video 1 - Uploading and Cutting Video - Trim clips and ends - using “Modify” drop down menu, “Trim Clips” to edit beginning/ending to get down to 15 minutes, or piece together two parts in allowed.
Video 2 - Audio - adjust volume as needed. This is the gift of the MAC, the sound can be turned up or down if needed.
Share - In the top right corner of your project, you will see a square with an up arrow to upload your video. Choose to upload it as a file. This will make it easy to save to the NBPTS site.
For clipping the ends down to the right size and resizing, this guy does a good time explaining how to use YouTube as a tool for this.
