In our fiction section, we sort by the author's last name, but that would be too confusing in nonfiction.
Instead, every nonfiction book has an address called a call number. That number tells you what the book is about and where it lives on the shelf.

Let's look at how to classify books about World War 2:
900 - History & Geography
940 - History of Europe
940.5 - Years 1918 to now

See how the 940s are more about the European battles while the 950s are on the Pacific front? Stop by to browse the shelves next time you're in the library.
LibraryThing is an interactive website that librarians use to understand the classification of a book when it arrives and we need to put a call number on it.
