HEALTH AND SAFETY

HEALTH AND SAFETY OVERVIEW

RESTROOM AND HANDWASHING PROCEDURES

  1. Students must wear their masks in the restrooms.

  2. Students should wash their hands after using the restroom.

  3. Maximum occupancy numbers have been posted outside of each restroom and students must adhere to this guidance.

  4. If a student leaves a class to use the restroom, the teacher will give the student a “post-it note” which serves a dual purpose:

a. The post-it note serves as the student’s Hall Pass that allows the student to be out of the classroom.

b. The student should place the post-it note on the poster outside of each restroom so that students will know how many students are in the restroom. When the student leaves the restroom, the student should get the post-it note to once again serve as a Hall Pass as the student moves back to class.

c. When the student arrives back at the classroom, the student should dispose of the post-it note in the trash can.

WATER FOUNTAINS

  1. Students may not drink directly from the water fountains.

  2. Students are encouraged to bring their own water bottle to keep with them and fill.

  3. Students may fill their water bottles or cups with water from the water fountains.

  4. Students may get cups from the Attendance Office to drink water out of the water fountain.

FACE COVERING OVERVIEW

WCPSS requires a face covering for all school staff, students, and visitors at all times, including:

  1. Inside school buildings and anywhere on school grounds, including outside (except during an approved “mask break” under controlled situations)

  2. While traveling on buses, vendor transportation or other WCPSS vehicles

  3. All WCPSS work sites

  4. Even when 6 feet or more apart from other individuals

For students, mask breaks may be provided for students if we can meet all of the following conditions:

  1. Outside only

  2. Spaced 8-10 feet from all other individuals, including employees

  3. Students should remain stationary in the same space

  4. Students should all face the same direction

Face Coverings Best Practices:

  1. Keep face covering over nose, mouth, and under your chin when wearing it

  2. Do not take it off to interact with someone or pull the face covering off your nose or mouth

  3. Do not touch the outside of the face covering with hands

  4. Do not touch or wear other people’s face coverings

Face covering of your choice should:

  1. Fit snugly against the sides of your face

  2. Be reasonably comfortable

  3. Allow you to breathe easily

  4. Be secured safely over nose, mouth and under your chin

  5. Be changed if it becomes soiled or wet

  6. Face shields may be worn in addition to cloth face coverings, but not in replacement of the cloth face covering

  7. Cloth face coverings should be washed as needed:

    1. Wash face covering in washing machine using soap and water

    2. Dry face covering in a dryer or allow to air dry

Board Policy Applicable to Appropriate Face Coverings:

  1. Board Policy I-5 Student Dress Code: Student dress will adhere to the standards set out in the Student Dress Code policy. To promote these goals, students may not wear or carry clothing, jewelry, book bags, or other personal articles that:

    1. Depict profanity, vulgarity, obscenity, or violence;

    2. Promote the use or abuse of alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs;

    3. Are prohibited under Policy 4309 III-2 (Gang and Gang Related Activity) or any other provision of the Code of Student Conduct;

    4. Threaten the health or safety of staff or students; or

    5. Are reasonably likely to create a substantial disruption of the educational process or operations of the school.

  2. Board Policy II-2 Inappropriate, Illustrations Images, or Other Materials: The possession of illustrations, audio or video recordings, written materials, graphics, or other print or digital documents, media, or files which significantly disrupt the educational process or which are profane, pornographic, or obscene is prohibited.

Students will be expected to follow health safety protocols, including wearing a face covering. Our school will adhere to the Student Code of Conduct for students not following health and safety requirements. Consequences can include a change from an In-Person learning setting to a Remote Learning setting.

WCPSS FACE COVERING GUIDANCE

COVID-19 CARE CENTER OVERVIEW

If a student is feeling ill, the following steps will be taken:

  1. Our COVID-19 Care Center is located in Room 2309 in the Cafeteria.

  2. If the student is experiencing shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, 911 will be called by administration, a staff member, or our School Resource Officer.

  3. Students must wear a face covering unless they have an approved medical accommodation plan. If a student does not have a face covering, one will be provided to them. Face coverings should not be placed on:

    1. Anyone who has trouble breathing or is unconscious

    2. Anyone who is incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the face covering without assistance

  4. A staff member wearing a face covering must escort the student to the COVID-19 Care Center while remaining at least 6 feet away from the student.

  5. A staff member must contact the student’s parent/guardian or emergency contact to immediately pick them up from school.

  6. A staff member must remain with the student in the COVID-19 Care Center until the student leaves campus.

  7. A staff member must keep the student under visual supervision at all times, while remaining at least 6 feet away from the student.

  8. A student who is in the COVID-19 Care Center must be picked up from school by a parent/guardian and is not permitted to use WCPSS Yellow Bus Transportation home.

  9. When a parent/guardian arrives to pick-up a student who is located in the COVID-19 Care Center, the parent/guardian needs to report to the Front Entrance of the school. Please press the buzzer and share that you are here to pick up a student from the COVID-19 Care Center. The student will be escorted to the Front Entrance to meet you. Parents/Guardians are not allowed to enter the school.

  10. The Principal/Assistant Principal/COVID-19 Coordinator will ensure that all reporting requirements are met.

  11. See What Happens When There is a COVID-19 Case on Campus for more information regarding COVID-19 procedures.

QUARANTINE INFORMATION

If a student has COVID-19, and/or is experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19, they must quarantine until they are allowed to return to school.

A student who is diagnosed with COVID-19 within the last 10 days may return to school if:

  1. It has been 10 days since the date of their first positive COVID-19 diagnostic test, if they have not developed any symptoms of COVID-19.

  2. If they develop symptoms of COVID-19, they must remain home until they meet the criteria requirements for someone experiencing a symptom (see below).

A student who is experiencing a symptom associated with COVID-19 may return to school when they (or their parent/guardian on their behalf) can answer YES TO ALL three questions:

  1. Has it been at least 10 days since you first had symptoms? AND

  2. Has it been at least 24 hours since you had a fever (without the use of fever reducing medicine?) AND

  3. Have your symptoms improved, including cough and shortness of breath?

If the student has a negative rapid antigen test, they must stay home until they receive a follow-up negative PCR test, have no fever for 24 hours (without the use of fever reducing medicine), AND they have felt well for 24 hours.

If the student has a negative PCR COVID-19 test, they must stay home until they have no fever for 24 hours (without the use of fever reducing medicine) AND they have felt well for 24 hours.

If the student has a confirmed diagnosis other than COVID-19 (like a stomach virus, ear infection, etc.) from a healthcare professional to explain the COVID-19-like symptoms, they must stay home until they have no fever for 24 hours.

A student who is not experiencing a symptom of illness but was exposed to someone with COVID-19 within the past two weeks may return to school if:

  1. It has been 14 days since the last date of exposure. They may not return any sooner, even if they test negative for COVID-19.

  2. The CDC considers someone exposed if they were within 6 feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period starting from 2 days before the illness onset or, for asymptomatic patients, 2 days prior to test specimen collection.

  3. If they test positive for COVID-19, they must remain home until they meet the criteria requirements for someone diagnosed with COVID-19.

If a parent/guardian or student has any questions regarding the length of the student’s quarantine, when the student can return, etc., please call the Main Office at 919-233-4050 and we will assist.
