To set up your google meet, go to meet.google.com. Click the + to join or start a meeting. Enter a nickname for your meeting (for example mrsbigelow), then press continue. This will take you to your meeting sign in page. Give your students the nickname you create to use to join the meet (you can use the same nickname every time).
Share your information with your group, please feel free to share my "Student Instructions" site to help them join. Instruct your students to go to the "meet" app in their WakeID portal. After clicking "Join Meet," they'll need to enter the nickname you created (remember, this can be the same for every meet). Set some guidelines for your group before beginning, some good suggestions are having everyone start with their microphone off and greet each other in the chat when they join.
Before your meet, make sure you have a schedule/agenda for what you would like to do. Your first meet might be a good time to check in with your students, perhaps in a morning meeting format. I would plan and set the expectation that the first few minutes will be spent making sure everyone can get in and communicate. While everyone is getting logged in, make sure you are checking your email/dojo to be in contact with anyone who might have trouble getting in. Plan activities that require meeting members to turn their microphone on/off and have procedures for moving between speakers and requesting to share (the chat box might help with this). Familiarize yourself with the chat box so you can look over questions and comments as you meet.
Note: you can record sessions in google meet, however prior to doing this, make sure you have informed participants that it will be recorded and the purpose of the recording (giving them the option to object/not participate if they don't want to).
This goes over some other tools you might want to use when you start using google meet, including captions, screen share, and where to find attachments.
Ending your meeting: When working with students, you will want to be the last to leave (otherwise participants can stay and continue the meeting/chat without you).
Grid View!: This is what google meet was missing. Install the chrome extension for grid view to be able to see everyone while you are meeting: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-meet-grid-view/bjkegbgpfgpikgkfidhcihhiflbjgfic?hl=en-US
Sharing Videos: You may want to share a short video during a class meet. It is NOT recommended to share this over your screen in presentation mode. Instead, share a link in the chat of either 1-share a link to the video in google drive, or 2-upload as an unlisted video in youtube and share that link.
