Education Psychology

ABOUT THIS PROGRAMME:

Psychologists provide a consultative and advisory psycho-educational service to schools, including psychological and educational assessments. Support may include assistance with individual/group support plans, assessment accommodations, referrals to special schools, counselling etc. as well as providing guidance for parents and teachers in support of learners. Short-term therapeutic interventions e.g. responding to trauma can be provided as required


The practice of the Education Psychologist is guided by the Big 6 Education policies that ensures support for learners within an Inclusive Education system. The Big 6 comprise the following policies and guidelines:
  1. Education White Paper 6 on Special needs Education.
  2. Guidelines to Ensure Quality Education and Support in Special Schools and Special School Resource Centres.
  3. Guidelines to Full-Service / Inclusive Schools.
  4. Guidelines for Responding to Learner Diversity in the classroom through Curriculum and Assessment Statements.
  5. Care and Support for Teaching and Learning Programme (CSTL)
  6. Screening, Identification, Assessment and Support (SIAS)

The policies that further guide the practice of the Education Psychologist are captured and guided by the HEALTH PROFESSIONS COUNCIL OF SOUTH AFRICA. The scope of practice of the different registration categories are available together with the relevant Code of Ethics.
