Week One

Monday, August 19:

  1. Who is Ms. Finn/What is AP Lit
  2. Making a Poem (in class activity)

Homework:

  1. Sign up for remind and get syllabus signed by Wednesday
  2. RESEND YOUR SUMMER ASSIGNMENT BY 12PM TOMORROW via EMAIL with the subject line "AP Summer Assignment, block ____, teacher _______". Anything after will be considered late, no expectations. Please text/message at least 3 people not in your class to spread the news.


Tuesday, August 20:

1. Review of Poems

2. First Reflection Assignment on "The Crossing"

    • Think of where you are now, your goals (stated or otherwise), and anything else that is coming up for YOU. Using that, respond to the following. Fill a page.
        • Who are you and what do you own?
        • What burdens you?
        • What have you been given?
        • What is calling you to the other side?

  1. Syllabus signed and sign up for remind by Wednesday.


Wednesday, August 21:

1. Warm-Up Activity: brainstorm a list of strategies you use when answering multiple choice questions (share with the class after)

2. Practice Prose and Poetry Multiple Choice with answers (in class only)

3. If time: Start class survey


Homework:

  1. Finish survey about school, goals, and general school stuffs.
  2. Figure out your Lit Journal Organization Methodology


Thursday, August 22:

1. Freewrite/Circle: What is the most influential text that you have read? What did this text make such a long lasting impression? Explain your answer. This can be a novel, short story, or poem.

2.Preview Open Question essay styles from AP Test

1. Be on time for in class writing tomorrow


Friday, August 23:

1. Collective Thinking: What is Figurative Language?

2. Timed Write - Q1 or Q2 prompt

3. Review Thesis statements - what makes a good one in Lit?

1. No official homework - try a poetry explanation if you have time! A poem of your choice!

  1. Practice analysis with mini-writings: focus on character, detail, setting, and tone.

1. Short Story Practice: "All Summer in a Day"

2. Using story above, practice outlining an essay on the spot

    • Include all aspects of the prompt
    • lay out the specifics you will talk about
    • Create a structure for yourself

Due Today: Outline of your 'essay' (we will not be writing this essay in actuality)

Friday, August 30:

1. Final Short Story! We will:

    • Analyze together (Short story = The Scarlett Ibis)
    • Apply prompt (A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In literary works a symbol can express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literal meaning. Select a novel or play and, focusing on one symbol, write an essay analyzing how that symbol functions in the work and what it reveals about the characters or themes of the work as a whole. Do not merely summarize the plot.)
    • Write an outline for a possible essay (no actually essay will be written)

Due Today: Final outline of the week!

Homework:

  1. Bible Reading Reflection (on google classroom) by 8am Tuesday morning
  2. Upload rough draft of a college app essay (prompt of your choice) by 12am Tuesday night
