What about drums (percussion)?
Percussion is a family of instruments that includes mallet instruments (like the bells and xylophone) and drums (like the snare drum and bass drum). Percussion is NOT offered at the beginning of 5th grade.
If your child is interested in percussion, please join band and choose a woodwind or brass instrument! During 5th grade, there will be auditions for band members to switch to become percussionists later in the year.
Families can acquire an instrument for their child in one of three ways:
1. Rent from a music store (highly recommended) - click here for music store rental options. White House of Music in West Bend makes weekly stops at our schools and will make sure your instrument is delivered to school and ready for your child's first day of Band Camp at Silverbrook. They keep a list on file of the reeds & supplies that are required to keep your child's instrument in good working order.
2. Purchase an instrument - please read here before purchasing there are often deals online that look too good to be true, and there's nothing more frustrating for a beginning band student than trying to play on an instrument that doesn't work.
3. Request a school owned instrument (for families that qualify for free & reduced lunch only) - you will have the option on the registration form to indicate your request. We do our best to give students their first choice of instrument, but cannot guarantee it.
Already own an instrument? Please get it checked over by a music store or band director to make sure it is in good playing condition before starting.
