Break up reading into small parts and make sure the students fully understand each part before moving on.

Helping students by giving background information on different topics can be very helpful if they are not understanding a current topic. I have found it is also helpful to explain significance to events and relate it back to their lives to make the information stick!

Helping students out on assignments by giving them advice from my personal experience, showing them work I had done on the assignments they're struggling with, or overall trying to help them better understand a topic with ways I had used in the past when I was struggling with topics.

Breaking up the topics into smaller sections and relating it to current events can be really helpful, especially to help them remember big topics. Sometimes, I found that showing them examples of my own notes helped them understand how they could organize their notes so studying was easier.

My best advice to future mentors is to help the students step by step on projects. Sometimes projects seem overwhelming and breaking it down while providing support can help students be productive in doing their work.
