AP vs IB and Research on the benefits of an International Baccalaureate education

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Global Research department collaborates with universities and independent research organizations worldwide to produce rigorous studies examining the impact and outcomes of the IB’s four programmes. In addition, many researchers—independent of the IB—produce quality studies on the effects of IB programmes. This information sheet provides a brief overview of key findings from recent research, both external and commissioned, on IB programmes from 2012 to 2015.

IB Diploma Requirements

If you are interested in the IB diploma, the following will illustrate what is required in order to achieve it.

All IB classes take place in the junior and senior years. Students must complete one class from groups 1-6, Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, and Creativity, Action & Service (CAS)

In order to achieve the IB Diploma, a student must achieve the following:

24 points on their 6 exams (each is out of 7, so an average of 4)
12 points must be achieved in their Higher Level (HL) courses (English, History, and one other)
No HL exam can score a 2 or a 1
A passing grade on the TOK assessments
A passing grade on the Extended Essay
Successful completion of CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) - 18 months of continuous involvement
Doing well on the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge assessments can give a student up to 3 bonus points on their exams
Note that the maximum amount of points a student could get would be 45 points (a score of 7 on all six exams and 3 bonus points).
IB does not expect students to excel in every subject area in order to get the diploma, but rather to challenge themselves in all areas. Thus while a student could possibly earn 45 points, they only need 24 points to attain the diploma.
