Chromebook Troubleshooting

I cannot access a website. If the chromebook is working and getting to the web but a specific site will not load then the browser data needs to be cleared. Here's how:

With the browser open, locate the three vertical buttons at the end of the taskbar.

• Choose More Tools from the Menu Options
• Choose Clear Browsing Data from the pop up menu that appears at the side.
• Set the TIME RANGE to All Time which is the last choice.
• Check all of the boxes.
• Choose the Clear Data blue button at the bottom of the screen.
• The student might need to turn the chromebook off and on again for the changes to take effect.

I cannot access the Internet. If the chromebook will not access the network, the first try is to turn the chromebook completely OFF. Wait 30 seconds or more. You might even have them close the lid and then open it again. Now turn the chromebook back on and try again. Many of our students never log off, they just close the lid and open it again.

I need to update my chromebook. Chromebooks will update themselves when used often but sometimes it is just a good idea to make sure you are using the most recent software. Here's how:

• Once a student has logged onto our network, there will be a gear in the lower right corner. Click the gear. Choose settings.
• A menu will appear in the middle of the screen.
• Click Settings in the upper left hand corner.
• The last choice on the menu is About Chrome. Choose it.
• One of the choices on the screen now is to Check for Updates. (It might say the Chrome is up to date.) Unless it is up to date, click on check for updates and update.
• You will need to restart the chromebook after the update is complete.

My chromebook screen is sideways/upside down. Some students think this is amusing as a trick on other students. The answer is fairly simple. Hold down the CTRL key, the SHIFT key, and the REFRESH key (on the top row - circle with an arrow) at the same time. You will need to repeat this until it is normal again.

Chromebook is asking for my old password. If you choose forgot password and then choose Proceed Anyway the chromebook will go ahead.

Chromebook color is not right. This is an easy fix. Here's how:

• Once logged into our network, choose the picture in the lower right corner.
• Choose the Accessibility tab. It is the little man.
• Choose High Contrast Mode and turn it OFF.
• All better.

Screen Resolution is too high. I can't see the whole screen. Here's the fix:

• Click on the picture in the lower right corner.
• Choose the settings gear.
• Pull down the menu from the settings tab in the upper right corner.
• Choose Display.
• In the lower right corner across from Resolution there is a blue ball on a line. Move it to change the resolution. Changes are automatically saved.

I can access a web browser but cannot access the Wayne County Home Page. Here's the fix:

• With the browser open, locate the three vertical buttons at the end of the taskbar.
• Choose More Tools from the Menu Options
• Choose Clear Browsing Data from the pop up menu that appears at the side.
• Set the TIME RANGE to All Time which is the last choice.
• Check all of the boxes
• Choose the Clear Data blue button at the bottom of the screen.
• The student might need to turn the chromebook off and on again for the changes to take effect or at least exit and reenter the browser.

I need to have the chromebook read to a student.

Pressing Ctrl Alt Z will turn on the Vox command.

After loading Vox, go to the settings (the gear in the upper right corner). There is an option to turn on the text under the mouse. Turn this to the on position and exit settings.

Now, when you highlight text on the screen, it will be read aloud. You will need a set of headphones for this.
