Field trips are an important element in learning. They provide a shared social experience that allows the opportunity for students to encounter and explore novel things in an authentic and engaging setting. Their importance is supported by professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association which asserts field trips can “deepen and enhance” classroom study (NSTA 1999) and the National Research Council who assert a quality science curriculum is one that extends beyond the walls of the classroom (1996).
Below is information about the core field trips we embark on during your child's fifth grade year. All field trips are tentative and may change due to curriculum and/or scheduling needs. Take a moment to read about these exciting and educational experiences.
First Grading Period Field Trip (September)
Uncover Indiana’s Secrets at this world-class institution, featuring unique exhibits and hands-on experiences that showcase the stories, events and characters that have helped shape Indiana’s history. Located in White River State Park in downtown Indianapolis, the Indiana State Museum brings the best of the museum world to Indiana. Spanning three floors, the museum tells the story of the Hoosier state, and features a year-round calendar of exhibits that explore Indiana art, science and culture. Constructed completely from Indiana materials – including limestone, sandstone, steel, brick and glass – the building itself is a work of art, with icons representing each of Indiana’s 92 counties integrated into its exterior walls. Step inside, and you’ll be invited to experience Indiana’s past, present and future through scientific, cultural, history and art exhibits that help define our place in the world.
Third Grading Period Field Trip (March)
NIFS hosts a field trip program reaching thousands of Central Indiana youth annually. Volunteers are a vital part in making this a successful experience for the visiting schools. Students participate in an interactive fitness presentation examining the positive effects of exercise, including an introduction to heart disease and its prevention as well as making healthy food choices. Fitness Center activities may include treadwall (rotating rock-climbing wall), track relays, fitness circuit, crab soccer, scooters, agility relays, and beachball volleyball.
Fourth Grading Period Field Trip (May)
Doubling as an outdoor classroom, Kings Island brings learning to life! Students have the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the basics of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in a fun and interactive setting. Students then use the knowledge gained from this field trip to design, develop, and build a roller coaster of their own in the classroom.
