MAEA Watch Party Date: December 8, 2021
Webinar Presenting Team: Thom Knab, Debra Hannu, and Martin Loftus
Watch Party Host: Margaurita Spear
Margaurita first became actively involved with MAEA as a member of the 2019 Conference Planning Committee. Shortly after her participation in the fall conference she joined the board as the Early Childhood Division Representative and the Professional Development Committee Chair.
Margaurita's path to becoming an art teacher was non-traditional. Prior to attending college she had a career in office work, but volunteered weekly as a Sunday school teacher where she would often integrate art into the lessons. She eventually realized that the best part of her week was the hour she would spend with her third grade class and with the support of her family decided to become a "real teacher." She then applied to college and left the security of her job to pursue her dream.
Upon graduation from Montserrat College of Art with a dual major in Painting and Art Education and a dual minor in Art History and Creative Writing, Margaurita received her state certification in pre-k to grade 8 visual art and began working as a frequently requested substitute teacher in Danvers and Marblehead. After a stint as a long-term sub at the high school level she added certification through grade 12. She took a hiatus from substitute teaching for approximately three years to manage a small music school before landing a full-time position teaching visual art to grades kindergarten through eight at a Catholic school. Following that experience she taught pre-kindergarten through grade 1 at a small independent school, which led her to accept the position of Early Childhood Division Director for MAEA.
Margaurita's personal artwork is predominately in oil painting with a tendency towards realism. She has also worked in paper craft creating meditative works reminiscent of mandalas. Once every year or so she donates art to various causes, such as Hope for Creativity and 4x4 for Education. A lifelong resident of Massachusetts, Margaurita currently lives in Beverly.
The MAEA Watch Party Discussion Series are ten companion discussions facilitated by MAEA leaders, members, and selected guests who bring their unique experiences to each month's topic. Watching the NAEA webinars is not a prerequisite, however doing so will enhance attendees' general knowledge of the topic. For the 2021 - 2022 Watch Party series, MAEA facilitators will engage participants in open conversation, share helpful resources, and promote a supportive space for all to join in. These discussions will relate back to the theme of the NAEA webinars, but will include stand alone content so that they are not exactly the same.
Please note that registration for the MAEA Watch Party Discussion Series does not include automatic registration for the NAEA webinars. The NAEA webinars are a separate offering through the National Art Education Association. NAEA members may register for these webinars at no cost, but there is a fee for non-members. Visit NAEA Online Learning: Upcoming Opportunities for more information about the NAEA webinars.
