By fostering a lifelong understanding and appreciation of music, we endeavor to engage our students in artistic experiences to develop skills which are transferable to all areas of life, including self-discipline, perseverance, teamwork, empathy, and curiosity. Through building a foundation of knowledge, skills and understandings of the artistic practices and cultivating cooperative skills needed for collective musical expression, students are empowered to make cultural connections and convey greater appreciation for and understanding of differing points of view.
We are a team of dedicated, passionate music educators who are deeply committed to the art of teaching and learning. We model growth mindset for our students by staying up to date with advances in educational research and continually exploring new ways of delivering curriculum and facilitating new ways of learning for our students. We are also a group practicing musicians. As such, we each have a visceral experience of the transformative power of music in our own lives. Deep in our core, we know that music is crucial to human experience and we have dedicated our lives to sharing this with the students we are lucky to create with each day.
Wayland’s elementary schools offer a comprehensive general music program with a curriculum designed to provide a solid foundation in the elements and principles of music and hands-on performing experience. With regular weekly lessons, students are engaged in activities such as listening and responding to music, movement and dance, vocal and instrumental performance, and creating original music. Lessons are designed to foster development of skills in areas such as beat competency, vocal production, music literacy, and performance technique. Class activities also focus on promoting cooperation through musical exchange with others and greater understanding of the historical and cultural aspects of music. Throughout the course of the K-5 General Music program each student will be exposed to a wide variety of musical genres, styles and traditions and will be encouraged to explore personal avenues of musical expression.
