Social Studies Roll-Out and Integration Notes
- There is opportunity to integrate the social studies into many areas throughout the curriculum
- Early year math introduces number lines, data/stats, and operations -- this can be a good time to introduce a time line from start of Planet Earth until today (see link below). Having this timeline hanging up support students year-long study of history. Numbers related to time and place can be easily integrated into math lessons.
- Early year review of protocols rules can be matched with U.S. Constitution knowledge
- Early year discussions about the origin of humans can shed light on migration and immigration in ways that connect well to the standards.
- Early year study in the environment can be matched with studies of King Philip's War and other historic events in the standards.
- Reading/writing activities can help to teach all social studies standards.
- There are many possible field studies that develop students' understanding of social studies including U.S. History.
It's impossible to add a timeline of all the important events that happened in U.S. History, but the timeline above gives you some idea of many of the events we will learn about this year. I will add other events that are not included, events you are supposed to learn about:
- Pequot War: The Pequot War was an armed conflict that took place between 1636 and 1638 in New England between the Pequot tribe and an alliance of the colonists of the Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth, and Saybrook colonies and their allies from the Narragansett and Mohegan tribes. - Slavery in Massachusetts: Massachusetts was the first colony in New England with slave ownership and was a center for the slave trade throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. No legislation was passed that abolished slavery until the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865 was ratified by the state.

- What is a principle? A principle a fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the basic way of working together as a system or organization.
- What is The Preamble of the United States Constitution? A preamble is an introduction to the United States Constitution that explains the document's purpose and underlying philosophy.
- Preamble of the United States Constitution: We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Thomas Jefferson wrote The Declaration of Independence, in that document he wrote that "All men are created equal." In our classroom we believe that all children should be treated with equity, respect, and opportunity. How would you update Jefferson's words to reflect our country today?

Facts
- Population of MA 1670: 30,000 (all people)
- Population of African Americans in 1670: about 200
- Connecticut River: The Great River because it seemed so much greater than rivers in England at the time.
- 1636: Settlers went to war with Pequot Indians almost killing all of them.
- English colonists worked to convert Native Americans to their religions. These Indians were called "Praying Indians" and had settlements in and around Boston. The largest was in Natick and built in 1651.
- Puritans, like the Pilgrims, came to the Americas for religious freedom. They had very strict rules and were intolerant of other religions and Native American ways.
- Racial tension led to the King Philip's War 1675-1676.
- King Philip's War was the bloodiest conflict in American history. 52% of English towns were attacked. One dozen (12) were destroyed. 2500 colonists were killed. About 5000 Native Americans were killed.
- Many Massachusetts families at the time owned slaves.
- Beginning in 1652, paper money was created.
- Many towns had lots of land for sheep grazing, and sheep's wool was turned into cloth.
- English rulers made many laws to restrict and make money from the colonists. The colonists did not like this.
