Drawing I introduces students to the Elements of Art and Principles of Design which are the building blocks that all artists use when critically creating a work of art. This course has an emphasis on developing students’ technical ability to draw what they see, improve their hand-mind connection, and engage in creative thinking. In addition, students will learn practical drawing strategies that will improve their skills while using a variety of media. Coursework will focus on still life, nature, human form, and architectural structures. The history of drawing will be viewed from a variety of resource materials. Students will document ideas, processes, problems, and solutions in a visual journal.
Upon completion of the Drawing 1 semester course students may take Drawing 2 or any other level 1 course
ART & DESIGN

This course is designed for students with an interest in web, product, fashion & graphic design. Art & Design introduces students to the Elements of Art and Principles of Design which are the building blocks that all artists use when critically creating a work of art. Students will create a variety of projects using lettering, collage, painting, printmaking, and digital applications. Emphasis will be on design rather than realistic drawing. Students will examine popular culture and how design impacts our world. Students will document ideas, processes, problems, and solutions in a visual journal.
ARCHITECTURE DRAWING

This course is designed for students with an interest in architecture, engineering, interior design, and industrial design. Students enrolled in this course will critically explore the Elements of Art and Principles of Design with an emphasis on line, form, space, scale, perspective, and proportion. Students learn to draw interior spaces and exterior structures. Students also design floor plans, construct models, and utilize 3-D modeling apps. A historical overview of architecture and application of drawing with design skills will develop a deeper understanding of structures. Students will document ideas, processes, problems, and solutions in a visual journal.
PORTRAIT & FIGURE DRAWING

This course is for students who have an interest in learning how to draw portraits and figures. Students enrolled in this course will critically explore the Elements of Art and Principles of Design with an emphasis on realism, accurate proportions, scale, anatomy and point of view. Students will continue to develop their ability to draw what they see, improve their hand-mind connection, and engage in creative thinking. Moreover, students will learn practical drawing strategies that will improve their skills while using a variety of media (graphite, charcoal, pastel, ink, colored pencils, etc.)
Although it is not required it is recommended that students take Drawing I prior to this course.
SCULPTURE 1

This course is for students who have an interest in constructing and carving hand-built 3D non-functional artworks. Students will sculpt with clay, plaster, wood, wire, and found objects while learning additive, subtractive, and casting methods. Coursework will focus on the human form and natural environment, as well as cultural and historical contexts. Students enrolled in this course will critically explore the Elements of Art and Principles of Design with an emphasis on form, space, texture, and balance. Students will document ideas, processes, problems, and solutions in a visual journal.
SCULPTURE 2 & 3

Students will continue to explore and develop techniques and processes learned in Sculpture 1. Students choose which sculpting medium, style, and subject matter to explore in-depth. Emphasis will be on developing student’s personal style, completing larger scale works, and working more independently. In addition, students will learn about mold-making, welding, and using more materials (cardboard, foam, plaster gauze, and wax). Coursework will focus on the role of sculpture in society, learning and applying advanced techniques, and completing a collection of artwork to exhibit at C.A.F.E. Students will document ideas, processes, problems, and solutions in a visual journal.
PAINTING I

Students will learn to paint with watercolors, acrylics, and oils on a variety of surfaces (paper, hard board, canvas board, and canvas). Students learn fundamental techniques and how to “see like a painter.” In addition, students will also learn about types of brushes and their functions. Coursework will focus on composition, value (light & shadow), and color (mixing, layering, & schemes). The history of painting will be viewed from a variety of resource materials. Students will document ideas, processes, problems, and solutions in a visual journal.

Students will continue to explore and develop techniques and processes learned in Painting 1. Students choose which paint medium, style, and subject matter to explore in-depth. Emphasis will be on developing student’s personal style, completing larger scale works, and working more independently. In addition, students will also learn to build a canvas stretcher, more advanced painting techniques, and use a variety of paint additives. Coursework will focus on the role of painting in society, learning and applying advanced techniques, and completing a collection of artwork to exhibit at C.A.F.E. Students will document ideas, processes, problems, and solutions in a visual journal.
CERAMICS 1

This class is designed for students who have an interest in working with clay. Students will be introduced to the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, building blocks that artists use when critically creating a work of art. Students will make functional and sculptural works with both hand-built and wheel-thrown methods. In addition, students will also learn about glazing, vocabulary, tools, and kiln operation/firing. Moreover, students will learn fundamental techniques with a focus on analyzing and executing good design, forms, textures, aesthetic and craftsmanship. Students will thoroughly document ideas, processes, problems, and solutions in a visual journal.

Emphasis will be on critically developing students’ personal style, discover techniques, lead demonstrations, collaborate, load and fire student work and working more independently. Students will thoroughly document ideas, processes, problems, and solutions in a visual journal.
DRAWING 2 & 3

This course is for students that would like to continue exploring a drawing focus that was learned in Drawing I class. Drawing 2 & 3 presents new materials as well as an expansion of imaginative and conceptual ideas. Students will work more independently and complete larger scale pieces from still life, photographs, and electronic images. Students will also draw outside of class weekly to enhance drawing skills. Students will document ideas, processes, problems, and solutions in a visual journal.
STUDIO ART

Prerequisite: Completion of 3 art classes Fee: $22.00 per Year
This year long course is designed for students to choose their own path of study in an artmaking form (drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, ceramics, etc.) and medium (charcoal, ink, watercolor, oil paint, wood, wire, clay, etc.) of their choice. Students select a 2D or 3D focus, building on techniques and concepts they’ve acquired in their foundation coursework. Students learn how to develop original ideas by using a theme topic and researching artists. Students will thoroughly document ideas, processes, problems, and solutions in a visual journal and are required to curate an exhibit of their completed artworks at C.A.F.É.
Students need to complete 3 or more art classes before taking Studio Art. Students who plan on taking IB Art HL should take Studio Art as an IB prep course their Junior year.
IB (INTERNATIONAL BACCULAUEATE) ART

Prerequisite: Completion of 3 art classes or Studio Art. Must be a Senior. Fee: $22.00 per Year
This is an advanced and rigorous course for highly motivated students who plan on studying the visual arts after high school. Students should have above average technical skill, the ability to work independently, and a true passion for art. Similar to Studio Art, IB Art students choose the artmaking form and medium to best communicate and execute their concept. Students select a 2D or 3D emphasis and work towards technical mastery.
Requirements that must be met to receive credit:
20% - (CS) COMPARATIVE STUDY: Complete a written presentation analyzing and comparing 3 artworks by at least 2 different artists from different times and cultural contexts.
40% - (EX) EXHIBITION: Complete a cohesive collection of artworks. HL students complete 8-11 original artworks. SL students complete 5-7 original artworks. Curate and display an exhibit of artwork accompanied by written exhibition texts and a curatorial rationale statement.
40% - (PP) PROCESS PORTFOLIO: Develop & complete a comprehensive visual journal that documents artworks idea development, work process, experimentation, and progression as an artist.
This course will help prepare students pursuing an art career or degree at a university. Students who complete the course may receive advanced university standing or may earn university credit.
Students who plan on taking IB Art HL should take Studio Art as a prep course their Junior year.
