Wausau East High School offers students a unique opportunity to participate in one of thirteen Youth Apprenticeship programs in the following career paths/clusters:
Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources
Careers involve working with plants, animals and the environment.
Architecture and Construction
Careers include designing and building homes and other structures. OSHA and first training is required.
Arts, A/V Technology and Communication
Careers involve creative tasks such as writing, graphic arts, or performance.
Business Administration
Careers involve supporting organizations and/or management through organizational skills, people skills, office technology skills, information processing, hiring, benefits, payroll, and/or general employee relations
Education
Careers involve working in education such as before or after school programs, child care centers, YMCAs, Boys and Girls Clubs, or schools.
Finance
Careers involve working with insurance, banking and managing money.
Health Science
Careers involve helping people and animals with the medical care they need.
Hospitality/Lodging/ Tourism
Careers involve providing people with food, lodging and related services.
Information Technology
Careers involve working with computer hardware, software or network systems.
Manufacturing
Careers involve production, maintenance and assembly of products.
Marketing
Careers involve creating and selling products and services.
Science, Technology, Engineering & Math
Careers involve solving problems through research and design.
Transportation, Distribution & Logistics
Careers involve moving people and products from one place to another.
One or two-year Youth Apprenticeship programs (taken during junior and/or senior year) combine academic instruction, technical instruction and paid on-the-job training with an employer. Students can earn high school credit in addition to a state-recognized certificate of occupational proficiency. With the acquired proficiency, students can enter the workforce or go on to post-secondary education with marketable skills.
To be eligible for Youth Apprenticeship, students must display a genuine interest in one of the occupational areas listed above. Students need to register for related coursework during their sophomore/junior/senior year, be successfully meeting high school graduation requirements, maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA and have a satisfactory discipline and attendance record. Students with a GPA of 2.0-2.49 may be accepted with instructor approval. The Youth Apprenticeship program can be competitive, students must be hired by participating employers and complete all requirements.
