What is Health 7 all about?

In this class students will learn the importance of good health practices. Students will become aware that their actions affect their own personal well-being, as well as the well-being of others.


What will we be learning about?

Health & Wellness Unit -

  • In this unit, students will find out how their lifestyle affects how they feel now and in the future. They will learn that they can choose a lifestyle that will keep them feeling fit, healthy, energetic and happy. Not all influences on your health are controllable, therefore, students will learn how heredity, environment and behavior can influence the three areas of health: physical health, mental health and social health.

Mental Health Unit -

  • What is mental health? Factors that shape mental health.Self-esteem and self-concept. Lifeskills including decision-making, handling peer pressure, conflict resolution and stress management. Mental health problems including eating disorders and suicide. Other topics include school violence and sexual harassment.


  • Chronic and Communicable Disease Unit-
  • In this unit, students will learn about infectious diseases-their causes, how they spread, your body's defenses against them, what you should do when you are ill, and the ways to help reduce the risk of infection. The students will also learn about the cause, detection and treatment of a number of common noninfectious diseases and ways to help prevent them.


  • Nutrition/Healthy Eating-

o Learn facts about nutrients and their benefits on the body.

o Understand MY PLATE

o Analyze nutritional facts from fast food restaurants.

o Discover the consequences of prolonged fast food consumption


Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Unit-

What is a drug? Drug use, misuse and abuse. What tobacco does to the body including cancers, cardiovascular diseases and emphysema. Its ingredients and forms. The process of addiction. The dangers of secondhand smoke. Smoking and pregnancy. Teens and tobacco. The tobacco industry. Avoiding tobacco. Quitting tobacco. What is a drink? Alcohol's forms and effects on the body. Drinking and driving. Alcoholism. Why teens drink. The drugs of abuse such as methamphetamines,crack and cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana, heroin, steroids and inhalants. For all the drugs of abuse the students will know what they are, how they are used, their effects and their dangers. The students will also learn about safe alternatives, refusal skills, and how to get help.
