About the Friends of Watertown Music

Friends of Watertown Music

Friends of Watertown music recognizes the vital role of music in school curriculum. From kindergarteners playing xylophones to fifth graders improvising solos in band to middle schoolers experimenting with percussion instruments to high schoolers perfecting new harmonies in ensemble, music allows the exuberance of self-expression.

Music goes beyond joy though, connecting students to that place where their hearts and minds are inseparable. Music neither requires nor encourages students to hide their inner truths but instead calls them to find and be their whole human selves.

A local 501(c)(3) organization, Friends of Watertown Music supports music in the Watertown Public Schools, setting priorities in communication with the curriculum coordinator and administration. We have secured outside funding and, through the generosity of our donors, awarded our own grants for the immediate and long term needs of the teachers, new instruments and equipment, repairs, busing, and bringing in professional musicians and programs. We support the biennial music trip to NYC and volunteer at concerts, events, and elementary school instrument distribution night. Since our founding in 2011, our total support to date to the Watertown Public Schools is just under $65,000.

Normally early spring finds the Friends of Watertown Music volunteers hard at work for our annual Watertown MusicFest, a community event designed to celebrate music by bringing together all levels of musicians, from professionals to our town's youngest, in concurrent performances. Although we couldn't hold the event in person, this year we are excited to collaborate with the Watertown Public Schools Fine, Applied and Performing Arts department on this first ever Virtual MusicFest!

Today we thank our donors and sponsors.

Please let businesses know that you appreciate their support!
