Academic Skills is a specialized high school course designed to support students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in developing the academic, organizational, and learning strategies necessary for success in the general education curriculum and postsecondary environments. This course offers individualized and small-group instruction tailored to each student’s IEP goals, with a focus on skill development rather than content remediation alone. Instruction focuses on strengthening reading, writing, mathematics, executive functioning, and study skills through explicit, scaffolded, and research-based instructional practices. Students receive targeted support in areas such as comprehension strategies, written expression, problem-solving, note-taking, time management, self-monitoring, and test preparation. Assistive technology, accommodations, and modifications are integrated as appropriate to support access and independence.
The Academic Skills course also promotes self-advocacy, goal setting, and progress monitoring, helping students understand their learning profiles and actively participate in their educational planning. Instruction is differentiated to meet the diverse learning needs of students, with ongoing assessment and collaboration among special education staff, general education teachers, related service providers, and families. This course does not replace core academic instruction but serves as a supplemental support designed to help students make meaningful progress toward IEP goals, increase academic independence, and prepare for graduation, postsecondary education, employment, and independent living.
