In Watauga Orchestra, you learn to build and fix Violins, Cellos, Violas, and Bass, and we call that our woodshed. It is located in the corner of the Watauga High School Band and Orchestra Room ( room 2408 ). You learn to take instruments apart. You learn to put instruments back together or even put them together if they aren't even together in the first place. You learn to string instruments and change the strings out. You learn how to fix the pegs of your instruments.
The purpose of the wood-shedding aspect of the Orchestra is so that you can learn life skills if you are planning on continuing your musical career. So you can move around your hands and just explore the other aspects of music. At Watauga High School the orchestra uses woodshedding as a warm-up because if you jump right into playing without warming up for hands you don't play as well as you would if you had warmed up. We use fixing instruments as the warm-up because it has multiple benefits; you are learning life skills, teamwork, problem-solving, the use of tools (carvers, saws, and everyday tools), and deep critical thinking skills.
In the woodshed, we don't only fix instruments we also learn how to carve spoons, forks, and anything you could possibly imagine.
