MPA stands for Music Performance Assessment, and it’s a yearly, formal event for band, orchestra, and choir. We receive feedback on pieces we work hard on for months, building teamwork, friendships, and musical talent along the way. This school year, 2024-2025, we travelled to Charlotte on March 17th and performed at the Northwest School of Arts. Despite the multiple days lost, both through virtual or no school entirely, the WHS orchestra still worked hard every class period to accomplish our goal: to complete MPA and progress our musicianship, to inspire the freshman and upcoming freshman among us to indulge in music if they desire, and have fun along the way.
Even though we got an “excellent” rather than a “superior” this year, it doesn’t change the multiple superiors we EARNED previous years through the same hard work and dedication we practice every class period. We earned a Superior rating in Sight-reading. This proves our abilities, even though we couldn't rehearse as much this year.
MPA is a chance to prove the orchestra has what it takes–and we do. It shows how we can range from playing folk and fiddle tunes, to professional classical pieces like Waltz no. 2 by Shostakovich, and the Romanian Folk Dances by Béla Bartók (which we earned a superior on in the 2023-2024 school year). MPA is a demonstration of the commitment musicians in orchestra display, always pushing forwards and always leveling up our skills.
