Syllabus – Spanish 153 / Programa de Estudios – Español Tres

¡Bienvendos a la clase de Español Tres en el curso 2018-19

Este año empezamos usar la lengua para comunicar casi todo. For most students this is a challenging endeavor that requires daily practice. Practice-Practice-Practice is the key! We will be using the text Auténtico 3(Athentic) ISBN 0328934399 plus additional curriculum. Our focus is on speaking, reading, writing, and understanding Spanish through purposeful activities involving grammar, verbs, vocabulary, and cultures. The purpose of language is communication and effective communication is our goal.

Our book is divided into an introductory chapter and 10 temas (themes):

Para Empezar: Días diarias y especiales

Tema 1: Días inolvidables

Tema 2: ¿Cómo te expresas?

Tema 3: ¿Qué haces para estar en forma?

Tema 4: ¿Cómo te llevas con los demás?

Tema 5: Trabajo y comunidad

Tema 6: ¿Qué nos traerá el futuro?

Tema 7: ¿Mito o realidad?

Tema 8: Encuentro entre culturas

Tema 9: Cuidemos nuestro planeta

Tema 10: ¿Cuáles son tus derechos y deberes?

In Spanish III students touch on every chapter. There will usually be a quiz one week and an exam the next. Keeping up on the homework is essential. We should be able to cover all verb tenses this year while continuing to build vocabulary for real-life situations.

I encourage parents and guardians to be in touch with any questions or concerns; students will keep track of test scores in their notebook. All parents are encouraged to monitor student progress on the Family Access Skyward system. Please keep your contact information up-to-date so I can send out frequent progress reports via Skyward email. Call Mrs. Klackner in the office for your password and to update your contact information (954-3169). Ask your student what (s)he is studying and provide opportunity for practice. (colored index cards, Spanish radio/TV stations, acting out vocab. for you)

Congratulation on making it to the 3rd year of Spanish!

Class Rules and Expectations / Reglas y Expectativas en la Clase

1. Enter class with an attitude to ONLY speak Spanish as much as possible. The amount possible will increase throughout the year.

2. Bring your binder, paper, your chapter packet(s), and a writing instrument. Be prepared to take notes each day, and study them nightly.

3. Homework is due to show at the start of class. Then, we will correct it together. If you are absent you must be willing to come correct it to get credit.

.4. Use every minute of class for learning and you will have the greatest success. Do not interfere with teaching or learning.

5. Study each night, and I suggest this pattern: One night study your vocabulary sheet, and the next night study verbs and any grammar notes.

6. You are responsible for material you miss. Exchange phone numbers/emails. Get a partner’s notes. Check the calendar/website for assignments. Ask for a PRIDE time pass or an appointment with me.

7. Remember that your grade requires effort and participation. Everyone will speak Spanish in class every day. (Missed activities cost you points-Go to the bathroom between classes.)

8. I am available for tutoring after school by appointment and during PRIDE Time.

9. Be in dress code. If you miss activities because you have to change, participation points will be docked.

10. Cell phones will be confiscated! Any cell phone out during a test will be considered cheating. Your parents can leave any messages for you at the main office.

Grading / Notas: Tests and Quizzes: 20-120 pts. (50%)

Homework: 10 pts. per day (40%)

Surprise notebook checks*: 10 pts. each

Participation: 5 pts. per day(10%)

CWU credit is available: The CWU syllabus has a different grading scale. You may earn a different HS and College Grade. HS tests may be retaken; college tests may not.

Notebook: *2 pts. for organization, 2 pts. for each of the following labeled sections with appropriate materials inside: Calendario y Notas (calendar and grade sheet), despiertas (wake-up activities), Apuntes (notes), Otro trabajo (other work)

Late work defeats the purpose of learning together; however, if you have special needs talk to me. One must sign up for a tutoring session to qualify for “special needs.” Every assignment should be thoroughly attempted before class when we correct as a group. Contact me with questions before the assignment is due. You have my email.
