Q: What is the name of the Head Coach?
A: Justin Redfearn
Q: Best way a student should contact you?

Q: When does your sport begin?
A: End of May is when we invite students to a parent meeting that highlights Cross Country starting the first Monday in June.
Q: What are the typical costs associated with playing this sport?
A: $100 register my athlete, $70 uniform, $75-$150 running shoes.
Q: To be eligible to participate in events sponsored by the Utah High School Activities Association, a student must maintain a 2.0 GPA and receive no more than one failing grade in the preceding quarter in which the student is participating. Is this your standard for your sport or do you hold your students to a higher standard?
A: This is our standard.
Q: Which quarter is the most crucial quarter to determine if they are eligible to play your sport?
A: 4th quarter of the year proceeding August.
Q: Is there a chance for students who miss the tryout phase of your sport to be able to still participate?
A: We are a no-cut sport. There are no tryouts. Students can pay the fee on register.my. athlete.com through September and still participate if they so choose.
Q: Why should a student get involved in your sport?
A: Cross Country is long-distance running over different types of terrain. The course can consist of grass, dirt (mud), sand, concrete, and asphalt. The race may include hills, valleys, roads, sidewalks, and trails. Races are 3 miles or 3.1 miles (5k) for both boys and girls. Cross country is a team sport for grades 9-12 with competitions officially beginning in August and ending in October. It is an all-inclusive co-ed sport with no tryouts or cuts. We run all through the summer in all conditions but lightning. A cross-country team consists of five or more runners who all race together at the same time with other teams. The varsity division may have a maximum of 7 runners, but on junior varsity, there are usually an unlimited number of runners allowed. The great thing about cross country (abbreviated XC or CC) is that everyone competes!

Spending so much time together as a team allows everyone to make great friends and feel an amazing team bond.

A: That is our minimum standard as set by the state to be eligible to participate. We tell our student-athletes there is no reason any of them should be under a 3.0. However, there are usually students that have a harder time with school. We help those students in every way we can to improve with school. Q: Best way a student should contact you?
A: Coach Lang (Boys Team) nick.lang@washk12.org and Coach Wilson (Girls Team) trent.wilson@washk12.org
Q: When does your sport begin?
A: We begin our pre-season early morning "Open Mat" workouts at the end of August. These pre-season workouts are not required, but are fun and can provide a great introduction to the sport to student-athletes that are curious about giving wrestling a try. These pre-season workouts can also help experienced wrestlers stay sharp and enhance their skills and timing to get them ready to compete at the highest levels in Utah as well as Nationally. We officially begin the high school season on the first Monday in November.
Q: What are the typical costs associated with playing this sport?
A: $100 participation fee, $100 spirit pack apparel, and provide your own wrestling shoes. Any other costs and/or fundraising will be explained during the parent meeting usually held towards the end of October. Money will never be the reason someone does not wrestle. Our coaching staff commits to see that all wrestlers interested in participating will be able to do so (even if means finding opportunities to help wrestlers earn the money through their own efforts or finding anonymous sponsors to help make up the difference).
A: 1st quarter grades determine academic eligibility for the first half of the season. 2nd quarter grades determine eligibility for the 2nd half of the season as well as our post-season divisionals and state championships.
Q: Is there a chance for students who miss the tryout phase of your sport to be able to still participate?
A: Wrestling is a no-cut sport. However, wrestling requires "Hydration and Body Composition Testing" before a student-athlete may compete. Our coaching staff assists each wrestler with this process, but there are certain deadlines associated with this testing for eligibility to compete. The expectation for wrestling is that all participants begin practice on the first day of practice in November. If there are extenuating circumstances that cause a student-athlete to miss the beginning of the season, the coaching staff will work with them on an individual basis. We often have wrestlers that are finishing up with football or another fall sport that is in playoffs/state championships that would delay their start date for wrestling practice. These wrestlers would not be penalized for missing wrestling practices because of their commitments to another school sports team in postseason competition.
Q: Why should a student get involved in your sport?
A: Finishing a high school wrestling season is quite possibly the most difficult and challenging thing a young student-athlete can face in their life. You will sweat. You will bleed. You will cry when nobody's watching. Some days you will be so sore that you will not want to get out of bed in the morning. You will lose in front of your family and friends (everyone loses at some point in wrestling). There will be times when you don't know if your body and mind can take it anymore as you face the rigors and grind of the practices and competitions. There will be days that you will want to quit. But... But if you can finish the season... You will be able to look yourself in the mirror and know that you accomplished something that nobody can ever take away from you. You will be stronger physically. You will be stronger mentally. You will be stronger emotionally. You will learn to win with humility and lose with dignity. You will have a sense of confidence and belief in yourself that will carry you through any life challenge you may face. You will make new friends. You will be part of something great. You will have a coaching staff that will have your back for the rest of your life. You will become a Warrior! Snow Canyon Wrestling has experienced a lot of winning in the last few years: -In 2023 we had our 1st ever Girls Wrestling All-American (placing in the top 8 at the national championships)! -4A Boys Wrestling 2022-23 ACADEMIC STATE CHAMPION AWARD for highest GPA average as a team! Boys Team 2nd in State in 2022! Boys Team 3rd in State in 2023! 2023 Boys and Girls Teams had 7 wrestlers in the State Finals with 3 State Champions! Boys Team Back-to-Back-to-Back 3X Region X Champions and have not lost a dual to a Region Opponent in 1,280 Days at the time of this entry! But more important than the wins is the character development and growth that all of our individual wrestlers experience as well as collectively as a team. And yes, we have a lot of fun with all of our team dodgeball games as we warm-up for practice. We have fun on the multiple road trips we get to take during the season. We have fun cheering on our teammates and feeling the support from them as well. As SC Warrior Wrestlers, Our Mission is: To Develop Resilience & Fierce Determination To Rise Above Pain & Weakness of Body & Mind To Finish What We Start To Raise Each Other Up To Become & Live as WARRIORS! The following message was written by former Snow Canyon student-athlete Kody Hafen a year after he won an individual State Championship Title back in 2016: “Wrestling will change your life forever. Whether you like it or not, you may not see it when you are in practice or running sprints. You may not even see it when you start winning matches and start having fun. During the season you might think it's just another sport... I can tell you without a doubt wrestling has changed my life, I can not begin to tell you the difference it has made in my life. I know for a fact when things will get hard in my life I have the will to go on. Just like in wrestling you have the option to stop, you can be “hurt”, you can quit. I'll tell you right now that if you quit this, you will quit a lot of things in your life. But if you stick it out, there is not one thing in this world that will stop you. You can get up every day and go to work. You can have a strong family because you work at it. You can be successful in any career you want, because you finished a wrestling season, because you chose to be the strongest of them all. Wrestling will change your life like it has mine. From the bottom of my heart I love my coaches, they have given me advice that will last a lifetime. Listen to them, learn from them. It's hard because you won’t realize it until it's all over, but once it's all over and you start life, you realize that this has changed your life and that this sport is different. Be a SC Warrior Wrestler, Be A SC Warrior Wrestler for Life.” -Kody Hafen
