Identify career opportunities in engineering and related fields
A more detailed list of standards for this course can be found HERE.
Course Requirements
In order to successfully complete this course, students are expected to:
Attend all class sessions (including being on-time)
Actively participate in class discussions and activities
Complete all assignments and laboratory activities to the best of ability
Take all quizzes and exams
Follow standard safety practices
Your final course grade for the semester will be calculated based on the following weighted categories:
Assessments – 70%
Classwork – 30%
Final letter grades will be assigned based on your percentage score according the district-mandated grading breakdown.
Assessment
During most weeks, you will take an in-class online quiz on the material covered previously. Each quiz is designed to provide a formative assessment of your learning. Quizzes are ‘open book,’ but are timed based on the number of questions, so it is best to be familiar with the content before starting the quiz. You will have two attempts at each quiz, so if you are not happy with your first score, you are expected to study the questions you missed prior to your second attempt. Your score will be the best of the two attempts. No additional attempts will be given. Safety tests will also be graded as part of your Classwork grade, as well as some select assignments.
Assignments
You will be given a variety of assignments both in and out of the shop. Shop participation is expected and required. Due dates will be posted on Power School.
Canvas
This course utilizes a "flipped classroom" model of instruction. This means that there is minimal time spent on whole-class instruction, lectures, class-wide discussions, etc. Instead, most course content is delivered online via Canvas in the form of mini-lectures and other videos, readings, etc. Class time then becomes open work time in which students are free to engage in self-directed learning activities such as working on classwork individually or in a group, working on shop projects, etc. Canvas will be used extensively in this course to provide learning materials, track student progress, and communicate with students and parents. Students are expected to check Canvas daily. Parents should also create an account and check Canvas frequently so they know what is coming up for their students. (Instructions can be found in the Links tab.) It is highly recommended that parents and students install the Canvas app on mobile devices they may have, and enable email/push notifications.
Attendance, Missed Work, & Late Work
Leaving the class without explicit permission from the instructor for any reason for any amount of time will result in you being immediately reported to the school administration. You will also me marked as skipping class
Missed work can be made up for excused absences if arrangements are made with the teacher.
Any and all late work is accepted without penalty or deduction in points. Late work must be fully completed to receive credit. Partially finished late work will not be accepted
Dress Policy
Due to safety considerations, the following dress standards* are required to use the lab facilities. You should always come to class appropriately dressed to work in the shop. Students not able to meet these standards will be asked to stay in the classroom or go change appropriate attire.
Safety glasses will be provided and must be worn at all times inside the lab.
Shoes must cover the entire foot(no sandals or flip flops) and may not have a raised heel or otherwise present a safety hazard.

COVID-19
Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19, some course policies and procedures may be modified as needed to comply with all District and State requirements which are currently mandated or may be mandated in the future. For example, shop safety expectations may include physical distancing and the use of masks, and these expectations will be enforced the same as any other safety expectation. Every effort will be made to minimize any negative impact of these requirements on the quality of the curriculum and instruction that is offered in DMS Technology Education courses. However, we recognize that some impact will be unavoidable. Parents/guardians and students are invited to contact the instructor about any concerns with specific classroom procedures unique to technology education classes. More general concerns should be directed to school administration and/or Washington County School District personnel. Individual instructors have no control over the policies of the school district, local and state health departments, or the State of Utah.
Information about district policies regarding COVID-19 can be found at the Washington County School District website.
