CCMS 8th Grade Band
The primary focus of this band is to develop the musical skills and understanding to enable students to create music at a high level. We work diligently on developing a great tone quality, a mastery of rhythm, and fluency on scales and arpeggios. These musical elements are then applied to concert repertoire that is both challenging and rewarding for each student. Students in this band typically have had 1-2 years of prior experience on their instrument, but beginners are always welcome.
CCMS Concert Band (9th)
This band is the flagship ensemble in the band program at CCMS. Building on the skills and understanding from previous years of experience, Concert Band members use their abilities to create high levels of musicality and expression. We focus on deeper elements of music; connecting and synthesizing musical ideas and concepts into a rewarding and fulfilling experience. The music we select for performances are enjoyable to play, impressive to the listener, and pointed toward further opportunities at the high school level. Students in Concert Band typically have 2-3 years of prior experience.
CCMS Percussion (8th &9th)
CCMS percussion students get the opportunity to refine skills on all percussion instruments including timpani, drum set, snare drum, and mallets. These students have the chance to perform with the CCMS bands for concerts, competitions and occasionally orchestras/choirs for concerts. Doing percussion at CCMS will help get students ready for percussion at the high school level.
CCMS Jazz Ensemble
The Jazz Ensemble at CCMS is made up of some of the finest musicians from both the 8th grade band and Concert Band. Rehearsals are conveniently held in the mornings before 1st period, enabling students to be enrolled in both ensembles without sacrificing an extra elective. In Jazz Ensemble we focus on creativity and expression through the many genres and styles that fall under the "Jazz" umbrella of music. These styles include: swing, shuffle, rock, funk, and Latin. The result of participating in Jazz Ensemble is an increased awareness of playing together with others, an ability to improvise and generate melodic and harmonic content, and a wonderful enjoyment of the music. In addition to woodwinds and brass, the jazz band also includes a pianist, guitarist, bassist, and drummer.
Ensembles @ Washington Fields Intermediate School
Beginning Band (grades 6-7)
The beginning band class offers the students an opportunity to learn to play a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument for an entire academic year. The students and the teacher will collaborate to chose one instrument from the woodwind family (flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon) or brass instruments (trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba). The goal of the class is to give the students the fundamental skills needed to continue their development in the intermediate band.
Intermediate Band (7th grade)
Intermediate Band is the second level of the band program at Washington Fields and gives the student an enriching and diverse instrumental music education. This class provides a number of performance opportunities for the student in a variety of settings. The daily objective of the class is to foster and promote musical growth through the playing of an instrument by the student. This band helps prepare students for band/percussion at Crimson Cliffs Middle School.
