All WCPS Video Boards use the vMix software
vMix is the software paired to each video board. The laptops are not interchangeable, since the outdoor boards are a different size and aspect ratio than the indoor board. You can not download the software on your own device. It needs a license to run (which is pre-assigned when a board is purchased), and the versions we have are not any of the currently available versions. We run version 24.0.0.75 in x64 bit configuration.
The software is loaded... it does just about whatever you could think up. Primarily, our boards see a lot of image files (.png, .jpg) and video files (.mp4, .mov). The boards, even though they are large and bright, are actually not "high-def" boards. To get the best performance out of them, I've found (and been advised) to keep all media in qualities no higher than 720p. Some short videos in 1080p will play, but they tend to have lag and almost seem as if they are buffering.
The following link from vMix was extremely helpful when I first started. There are videos covering just about every area of the interface and discussing the different inputs, outputs, channels, and feeds. I am working on specific screencasts and screenshots that include Greenwood specific details, but for now, check these videos out.
You can install the same version of vMix we have on the laptops, but you will need to sign up for the 60 day trial. We do not have extra licenses to activate on devices outside of the school.
Click the button to the left and download the .exe file to your computer. You will not need the configuration file (its a setting for WCPS).
*vMix only runs on 64-bit Windows devices. It will not run on a Mac.
The main interface displays two media boxes at the top of the screen.
The left side is the "queue" and the right side is the "live" output to the board.
The bottom portion of the screen shows all loaded media. When you click on a media, it moves to the queue. If it happens to be a video, you can preview it before sending it out live (keep in mind that the audio will play if available and it will play over the live output whether it has sound as well or not.
If you want to play a specific media instantly, you can click the Quick Play button to make it bypass the queue and go directly to the live feed.
The buttons down the middle of the screen are transitions. Quick Play is just instant switch, while the others are more animated. FTB is "Fade to Black" and will make the board appear to be powered off.
The audio mixer is on the far right, and controls the master audio out, and also each medias volume, if it has any.
The numbers at the bottom of the transitions are for overlays. We used these more in live streams, but they can be useful in other applications. If you need or want to use an overlay, there are some additional settings to be applied within the inputs individual settings.
Click the Add Input button in the bottom left to add new media to the screen. The Input Select window appears with all available media types listed on the left. See below for more details on this particular window.
For a complete description of each category, we suggest reviewing the vMix support articles and noting which ones are feasible and most useful for your sport. *Note that the school does not have any additional equipment other than what you are provided.
The Input Select screen is how you'll add any media to vMix. Each type of media must be added from its specific category on the left. You can not add images from the video category.
The main categories used are Video, Image, and Photos. If you are live streaming, there are additional categories to use.
Video: add any video file to the list
Image: add one image as an input
Photos: add a photos folder to run the images as a slideshow.
You must add multiple files separately. Selecting multiple files at a time is not possible for any of the categories.
Some of the categories are available, but our version of vMix does not support them in output mode (i.e. Instant Replay).
