About
A special interest is the importance of phonemic and phonological awareness skills in the consolidation of reading processing skills. These skills can be a strong foundation for accessing unexpected neurological paths to effective learning.
Favorite quote:
"It takes a village to raise a child."
~ African Proverb
Motivation:
For each of my clients to develop reading processing skills as well as the empowerment and comfort which can come from reading and writing for pleasure.
Welcome to Waroway Clinical Reading: Support for Learning
I have been a certified teacher for twenty-seven years. Twenty-five of those years has been teaching in the River Heights area of Winnipeg. During my years as a classroom teacher (1998 to 2014), I enjoyed helping all of my students form an appreciation of core subject areas including literature and math. However, I continued to search for effective ways to support students with processing differences as well as cognitive challenges.
Following evidence-based discoveries and client-centred understandings of how the brain learns to read (ie. educational neuroscience), I was inspired to obtain a Master’s degree in Education and Certification as a Reading Clinician from the Province of Manitoba. This includes membership with the Manitoba Council of Reading Clinicians. During this journey, I also received training in Orton Gillingham multisensory methods (which shares pedagogical similarities with Structured Literacy or the Science of Reading) offered by the Reach Learning Centre out of British Columbia, Canada.
Being a Student Support Teacher (2014 to 2025) has provided me with opportunities to apply my training in a wide variety of ways including special needs, neurodivergent learners (e.g. Autism Spectrum Disorder), executive processing challenges (e.g. Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), working memory, and language processing differences (e.g. dyslexia).
As a Certified Reading Clinician, my diverse training experiences enable me to develop individualized models of learning which reflect client's needs. I enjoy the challenge of being immersed within the community to support unique learning needs of each individual.
Apart from clinical reading, I am an active member in the community.
