Not always. Thickness is one quality indicator but it's not the most important one, and it can be misleading if you're not looking at what's making the plank thick. A 12mm plank with a thick foam underlayment layer is not the same as an 8mm plank with a dense SPC core and a 20 mil wear layer. Total plank thickness tells you how tall the floor is off the subfloor. It doesn't tell you how long the surface will last or how well the floor handles real conditions. The specs inside the plank matter more than the total number on the outside.Β
Plank thickness is a composite measurement that includes every layer: the underlayment attached to the bottom, the core, the print layer, and the wear layer on top. Two planks with identical total thickness can be built very differently. One might have a thick pre-attached foam underlayment padding out the total number with a relatively thin core and a modest wear layer. Another might have a thinner underlayment, a denser and thicker core, and a heavier wear layer. The second floor will outperform the first in almost every meaningful category despite potentially measuring the same or less in total thickness.
Where thickness does matter is in covering minor subfloor imperfections and in the feel underfoot. A thicker plank with a quality core bridges small subfloor dips and high spots better than a thin plank, which is why total thickness is still worth paying attention to as one data point among several. Thicker planks also tend to feel more solid and substantial when you walk on them, which is a real and legitimate comfort consideration especially in rooms where people spend a lot of time standing. There are situations where excessive thickness creates practical problems rather than benefits. Installing thick LVP in a doorway or transition area where it meets existing flooring at a different height requires transition strips and can create trip hazards if the height difference is significant. In a renovation where LVP is going over existing hard surface flooring, adding too much height can interfere with door clearances and appliance fits, particularly under refrigerators, dishwashers, and bathroom vanities. Thickness needs to be evaluated in the context of the specific installation, not just as a standalone spec.
The most common mistake is using total plank thickness as the primary quality filter when shopping. Thickness is easy to compare on a spec sheet and feels intuitive as a quality signal, so retailers know it sells. But a plank padded out with a thick foam layer to hit an impressive total thickness number is not a better floor than a denser, thinner product with a superior core and wear layer. Always ask how the thickness breaks down between underlayment, core, and wear layer rather than just looking at the total.Β
