Our Third Grade Curriculum
Module 1:
Overcoming Learning Challenges near and Far
Unit 1
In Unit One, students read realistic-fiction texts and explore different types of schools, libraries, and learning is used throughout the world. They will learn how each student faces their own challenges and must push to find a way to overcome them.
Unit 2
In Unit Two, students read nonfiction texts to travel all around the world and hear real stories about how schools, libraries, and students learning are different from their own.
Students also begin learning how to write a paragraph and will write how students overcome challenges in their learning.
Unit 3
In Unit Two, students read books based on real-life people (Booker T. Washington, Patricia Polacco, the Pilgrims & Native Americans) and hear real stories about how these real-life people face challenges in their own learning
Students then use their learning about writing a paragraph from Unit 2 and apply it to research questions they are asked in Unit 3.
November 21st 2022
Over the last few weeks, students learned about how to write a constructed paragraph based on a text we read. This week we used our learning to write paragraphs about ourselves.
Using what we learned in our SEL lesson the previous week, we wrote paragraphs about what we were thankful for!

Writing Paragraph using our "Writing Toolboxes"
Over the last few weeks, students have filled their writing toolboxes with different graphic organizers and checklists they can use to help them write a paragraph. This week students decided what tools they needed to help them write a paragraph. Some students chose to use note-taking graphic organizers, others used a full sentence graphic organizer, and others decided to just jump into their writing without a graphic organizer!

Reading Nonfiction texts to find Learning Challenges
This week students have been working with partners to learn about their assigned country. While reading they take quick notes to help them answer their research question. Once they finished their research, they then planned their writing and used a checklist to make sure they had everything they needed before typing their final copy.
