Under 70 O.S. § 11-103.6, state law requires eighth grade students entering the ninth grade to complete the college preparatory/work ready high school curriculum outlined in the statute, unless the student’s parent or legal guardian approves the student to enroll in the core curriculum. Successful completion of either curriculum will result in a student receiving a standard diploma. However, the core curriculum does not meet college entrance requirements, nor requirements for the Oklahoma’s Promise scholarship available to students whose family income is $55,000 or less annually and who earn a 2.5 GPA in the college preparatory/work ready curriculum.
Choosing the courses a student takes in high school is an important decision for you and your child. A college preparatory curriculum is challenging, and may help determine a student’s future success in higher education and the world of work.
In the course of your 4 years of high school, you will take:
4 years of English
3 years of Math
3 years of Science
3 years of Social Studies
2 years of a foreign language OR 2 years of computers (must be 2 of the same)
1 Fine Arts
1 more core class
and at least 6 electives
There are specific requirements about which classes count towards your core classes (see graduation cohort links above). Students will need to be responsible in tracking their credits in order to meet graduation requirements.
Notes:
There are specific requirements that need to be met for Oklahoma's Promise.
If you plan to play college sports, there are Division 1 and Division 2 requirements to be accepted for scholarships.
Walters High School requires 25 credits to graduate (2 more than the state minimum of 23).
Juniors and Seniors have the option of taking college and tech courses that may count towards college credit or lead to a certificate.
Walters High School Partners with Red River Technology Center in Duncan and several local and regional colleges.
Applications for all the options are dependent on your grades, test scores, behavior, and spaces available. Some of the programs are very popular, so it is best to plan ahead and apply early!
Students wanting to take advantage of these opportunities need to be on track to graduate and have certain core classes completed in their Freshman and Sophomore years.
You will usually attend college courses or the technology center in the morning and then have 3-4 classes at Walters High School.
Colleges may offer in-person or online courses. Some schools that WHS students have attended in the past:
Cameron University (Lawton and Duncan campuses)
Western Oklahoma State (Altus)
Mid-America Christian University (Oklahoma City)
Oklahoma State University (OSU)
Tulsa Community College (TCC)
You are not limited to these colleges. If you find a college that offers concurrent enrollment please contact me so we can discuss your options.
When you enroll into college after high school, you must request transcripts from each place you took concurrent courses.
Your credit will show on your high school transcript, however, colleges will not accept that alone for college transfer credit. You need to request an official final transcript from the college you took courses.
You can check what credits will transfer between Oklahoma colleges at this site: https://www.okhighered.org/transfer-students/course-transfer.shtml
You may also ask your enrollment or admissions counselor if they have a credit transfer policy or guide.
