Scholarships and grants provide free money that does not have to be paid back. Student loans must be paid back with interest. If you want money to pay for college, it will be worth your time and effort to apply for scholarships. As you write essays, save them so you can use them on your scholarship applications. Keep a log of which scholarships you have applied for, and apply early and often!
You also want to have a resume or brag sheet available. This can often be attached instead of listing out awards, activities, and clubs separately.
If you need help with a resume, scholarship information, reference, or transcript please ask Mrs. Bussinger or the appropriate teacher/administrator BEFORE the deadline for the scholarship. We are more than happy to help but the day of it is not enough notice for us to give you the attention you require!
For any scholarships that ask for activities, honors, work, etc. it is perfectly acceptable to write “see attached” and include your resume/brag sheet.
It is also acceptable to type out any written essay/long answer questions, print your answers, and write “see attached”. I think it looks much more professional and is 100% readable!
Congratulations on getting accepted into college! Now that you’ve been admitted to a few schools, the next step of the process is to compare the financial aid packages . Colleges and universities create financial aid offer letters for admitted students, breaking down all the aid they’re able to offer to cover the cost of tuition & school-related expenses. This is often referred to as an “award letter” or “financial aid package.” This offer letter will be unique to each school that you are accepted to. Some colleges send award letters in the mail while others post online to student portal accounts. Here are some key things to pay attention to as you review and compare your financial aid offers:
Note: Before committing to a school, review your offer letters with a parent/guardian or trusted adult to make sure you make the right choice for you and your financial situation.
If you're planning on applying to college or for a job, you're most likely going to need letters of recommendation and/or references. The people writing letters of recommendation or providing references will be asked to speak about you - your experience as a student or employee, your talents, what you contribute to a class or job, and more. Colleges and potential employers use this information to make a more holistic and informed decision about admitting/hiring you, so it's important they have as much information as possible! That's where writing a brag sheet comes in.
